Paragraphs Every paragraph you write must follow this structure: P point – this is your topic sentence which tells the reader what your paragraph is about. E evidence – this is a quotation or example which proves your point. E explain – this is where you explain why you have made your point, and how your evidence shows that you are right. L – Provide a link back to the essay question

Paragraphs Example paragraph 1: P - ‘Charlotte O’Neil’s song’ encourages the reader to think about ideas such as the injustices of the class system. E Charlotte O’Neil gets treated really badly as a result of being poor and having to work as a maid. This is evident when it says, “You lay on a silken pillow. I lay on a cot.” It is then stated that, “the poor deserve the gate.” E This shows us that Charlotte O’Neil did not have as nice things as her master. Her master believes she deserves this just because she is poor. L – The reader responds by feeling sympathy for Charlotte O’Neil at first and then very proud of her when she stands up to her boss.

Paragraphs Example paragraph 1: P - ‘Charlotte O’Neil’s song’ encourages the reader to think about ideas such as…. E This is evident when….. E This shows us that….(explain what the quote tells us about this idea) L – The reader responds by feeling…..
