“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 INTRODUCTION Many have a difficult time when they discover that the life that they are living does not line up with what God says we should be doing Feeling the guilt, and knowing that repentance requires a change in lifestyle (Acts 26:20), many go away in anger because they must have it “their way or no way at all”

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 INTRODUCTION Jesus taught the need for repentance when He said, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3, 5). Because we do not want to perish, and suffer the consequences of Hell, we must find it within ourselves to change when God does not approve of “our way”.

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 INTRODUCTION Repentance is needed because we are all guilty of sin (Rom. 3:23) and sin is a transgression of God’s law (I John 3:4) Repentance means then, that we are making a change from doing our will to God’s will (See Matthew 21:28-29), not only feeling sorry for our error (II Cor. 7:10)

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 INTRODUCTION Many go away “sorrowful” when they know their life is at odds with God’s way, but never repent (Mark 10:17-22) Tonight, we want to discuss some factors that will urge an individual to repent of sin and do God’s will

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 The Goodness Of God Leads To Repentance Romans 2:4 -God has always been good to mankind (Psalm 52:1) -God was good to man after creation (Gen. 1:26-31; 2:7-17) -Man was deceived and transgressed God’s law being put out of the garden with consequences for sin (Gen. 3:6ff;Rev. 3:19)

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 The Goodness Of God Leads To Repentance Romans 2:4 -Even though “all have sinned” (Rom. 3:23), God remains good to us (John 3:16) -God sent His only Son while we were yet sinners (Rom. 5:6-8) -God cares for the sinner, but not the sin and makes provisions for us to be forgiven (Eph. 2:1-7; Psalm 130:3-4)

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 The Authority Of God Commands Repentance Acts 17:30 -God wants all men to repent of sin -John prepared the way of the Lord with repentance (Matt. 3:1-2) -Jesus commanded repentance (Matt. 4:17) -The apostles preached repentance to all (Mark 6:12; Luke 24:47; Acts 2:38; 3:19; Acts 20:21)

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 The Authority Of God Commands Repentance Acts 17:30 -God wants a changed people (Titus 2:11-15) -God wants a holy people, that will not return to their ignorant sins (I Pet. 1:13-16) -We must appreciate our salvation in Christ, and never become what we “were”, but rather what God wants us to become (I Cor. 6:9-11)

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 The Compassion Of God Waits For Repentance II Peter 3:9 -God is patient or long-suffering with mankind (Psalm 86:15) -The compassion of God can be viewed with examples in history (I Peter 3:20; Gen. 6) -God wants all to be saved, not just a few (I Tim. 2:4) -The Lord waits for repentance (Rev. 2:21)

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 The Compassion Of God Waits For Repentance II Peter 3:9 -The Bible is clear about the need for repentance before judgment (II Pet. 3:10-15) -Jesus tells us that His purpose was to call sinners to repentance (Luke 5:31-32) -The apostles tell us that repentance in Christ is the Lord’s plan (Acts 3:26; 5:31)

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 The Love Of God Rejoices Over Repentance Luke 15:7, 10 -Jesus’ parables teach the love for one lost soul and the joy caused by repentance (Lk. 15) -The purpose of Jesus being sent to earth is God’s love in trying to save the lost (Lk. 19:10; Matt. 26:28) -The Father’s love is seen in sending Jesus His Son (Titus 3:3-7)

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 The Love Of God Rejoices Over Repentance Luke 15:7, 10 -Men need to see the great love of God in Christ and repent (I John 4:9-10) -Jesus spoke of the love involved with His sacrifice (John 10:11, 15-18; 15:13) -Those who fully repent and obey God’s will, experienced this joy (Acts 2:46; 8:39; 16:34)

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 APPLICATION God has given to us, several motivations to repent: -The goodness of God leads to repentance -The authority of God commands repentance -The compassion of God waits for repentance -The love of God rejoices over repentance

“Unless You Repent” Luke 13:3, 5 APPLICATION Whether or not this is adequate motivation for you, Jesus taught… “unless you repent you will all likewise perish. " If “you” are accountable, and know “you”have sinned, then “you” need to repent and be saved in Jesus Christ tonight! (II Cor 6:2)
