Why? To create a feasible, interactive, and interesting energy harvesting system To inform the public of renewable energy possibilities and to raise energy awareness To convert underutilized energy into a useful output (i.e. laptop)

What? Bicycle-powered Laptop  Retro-fitted Recumbent Exercise Bike  Generator/Motor  Data Acquisition Device  Laptop

How? Convert the rotational energy of the exercise bike into electrical energy through a generator or motor Use that power to run a laptop that will be secured to an adjustable table, fitted to the bicycle Gearing between the flywheels and the generator to ramp up the RPM

Power Production Average Person produces continuous 63rpm Flywheel produces rpm and 3-12 N*m Torque Pedal Power 95% efficiency Laptop uses 19.5V adapter, 130W max charger Laptop consumes on order of 15W average

Specifications: Mechanical one gear for pedal shaft 5 gear freewheel Derailer Shift lever 1 gear on the flywheel 1 gear on the generator bike chains (x2)

Specifications: Retro-fitting Cut down and bolt on front gear Remove belt drive system and magnetic resistance mechanism Remove belt pulley, weld/bolt 5 gear freewheel to axis, other machining as necessary Attach single gear to drive generator (bolt to flywheel)

Laptop Interface Self-written computer program that displays  rpm  calories burned  distance traveled  power created  time Informational facts  (i.e. Real-world facts about equivalent to power created)

Specifications: Power Generation Initial Capacitor Buck converter  95% efficiency  Feedback on current to maintain charging rate  PWM sets duty cycle, which sets charging rate, which sets resistance to biker  PWM adjustable Second Capacitor 12V Lead-Acid battery

Specifications: Measurement / UI LabJack (data acquisition hardware) sensor(s)

Specifications: Laptop Dell Laptop from IS&T Adaptor cable for laptop 12 V cigarette lighter plug Laptop security device Adjustable Table

When & Where? April 30 th -May 2 nd  Place temporary installment in public area i.e. Lobby 10, Lobby 7, Student Center, or Stata Center Afterwards…  Permanent Installment in Stata or Z-Center gym  Or in dormitory exercise room

Permissions April 30 th – May 2 nd Procedure:  The exhibitor(s) reviews the project and possible hazards with the professor/ supervisor.  Fill in the project description and safety information form. The exhibitor s the form to space administrator at a time.  Safety Program reviews the project description received from the space administrator. If the safety issues are complicated, Safety Program will make an appt to discuss the project with the exhibitor and review diagrams, etc.

Permissions cont.  When all the approvals/ reviews are completed, both the exhibitor and professor/ supervisor will sign the final message. Post the original on or near the project when it is set up.  Afterwards:  In contact with representatives from Stata and Z center

Responsibilities Everyone: Device structural design, device appearance, conversion of rotational motion to electricity Piotr – Electrical consultant, energy storage Sebastian – Generator, energy storage Sara – Human interaction with device Kendra – Team coordinator, gearing Julia – Public Liasion, flywheel Tina – Generator and energy conversion Devon – Mechanical components extraordinaire
