Do Now: Respond to the following in 2-3 complete sentences: What would you do if you were president of the United States? Aim: What is the subjunctive mood in English and how do we apply it?

What is subjunctive mood? The subjunctive mood is the verb form used to express a wish, a suggestion, a command, or a condition that is contrary to fact. Examples: 1.The polite way to give a suggestion: If I were you, I would reply yes. 2. Express a wish: If I became a millionaire, I would help the poor.

Aim: What is the subjunctive mood in English and how do we apply it? Notice the tense for the subjunctive mood in English 1.Present tense changed to the past tense: If I became a millionaire, I would help the poor. (Past tense for the clause and past future tense for the main sentence)

Checkpoint # 1 : Do you understand today’s vocabulary words? Raise your right hand if you clearly understand today’s grammar lesson. Raise your left hand if you do not clearly understand today’s grammar lesson.

Aim: What is the subjunctive mood in English and how do we apply it? Subjunctive mood to show something contrary to the past fact: “Had he and I but met By some old ancient inn, We should have set us down to wet Right many a nipperkin!” Expressed in plain English using subjunctive mood: If he and I had met in an old inn, we should have sat drinking and wetting lots of napkins. The tense used for the expression contrary to the past fact: If …..had + (past participle)…., …should (would) have+ (past participle)….

Checkpoint # 2 : Do you understand today’s task? Raise your right hand if you clearly understand the past subjunctive mood. Raise your left hand if you do not clearly understand the past subjunctive mood.

Aim: What is the subjunctive mood in English and how do we apply it? Let’s try to practice the past subjunctive mood: A. The fact is you forgot to bring your umbrella yesterday, so you got wet. Now use the subjunctive mood to show the opposite effect of the past fact. __________________________________________________________ Pair work. One student gives a situation and the partner will use the past subjunctive to make a sentence.

Aim: What is the subjunctive mood in English and how do we apply it? Exit Question: answer the following: How is present subjunctive different from the past subjunctive mood in English? Make up two sentences to show that.
