How To Write The Perfect Answer Gooda’s Cheat Sheet

Q1 - Characters Prog is brave (takes on everybody by himself) Prog is clever (flower pot death) SK is scared/weaker than Prog (hides in the car) SK is funny (opens door to take out woman on bike) Henchmen are ineffective shots (Only hit Nic once in entire scene Henchmen are heavily armed (Many weapons everywhere, despite the surprise attack) Henchmen are disposable (shot without a second thought. Just obstacles the protagonist must overcome) Antagonist doesn’t fight. (Lets the henchmen have first go at Nic)

Q1 - Events MOT – When Nic shoots the final woman with the flower pot - C MOT – When Butterman joins the fight with the car door - C MOD – When Nic is shot - C Destruction of Environment - C Gunfight - C Heavily outnumbered fight (1 vs many) - C

Q2 – Mise En Scene Prop (Newspaper being read), suggests that the pensioners are old and boring Prop (Guns) – comedic considering the boring set-up. Suggests action to the audience. Creates excitement Costume (suit on antagonist), suggests he is of a higher level of importance to henchemen Costume (tweedy fabrics, dull colours) – creates comedy when juxtaposed with violence Eng country village – relatable. Creates comedy Blocking (old guy reading paper in front of security cameras) – creates comedy when he doesn’t notice spray paint Blocking (Angel in front/centre most shots), runs ahead of Butterman – Suggests importance to audience. He’s the leader Costume (Angel’s sunglasses) – suggests rebellion against the town’s wishes Costume (Teenagers hoodies) – They act as a unit. They’re a mob. No individuality Natural lighting – Creates surprise that all this violence is occuring in ‘broad daylight) – Creates shock & laughter

Q2 – Soundtrack Western score – suggests a gun fight will take place, builds anticipation Trumpets in score – suggest bravery Diegetic sound (Horse hoofs across every shot in the opening sequence) – build anticipation Musical attack (woman is flipped over the car door) – creates laughter/joy in the audience. Something important has happened. Score increases in pace and crescendos when Butterman joins the fight. This suggests that this is a turning point Dialogue (Morning) – Ironic for a polite gesture given that this is a gunfight about to happen. Creates laughter.

Q2 – Camerawork Long Shot of Nic Angel – Introduces setting and showcases Nic’s bravery – we’re impressed Zooms on antagonists in opening sequence to show their surprise at Nic’s presence. Creates tension/anticipation Many pans during the gunfight to disorient the viewer 2 shot on Nic and Butterman to suggest their relationship to the audience, makes us happy Tracking shot on Nic as he runs and shoots, showcases his skill, impresses us.

Q2 – Editing Jump Cut for Nick on his horse – exaggerates Nic’s progress, impresses us Quick cuts (montage) of reactions immediately preceding ‘morning’ builds tension Foley on window smash – this was done in post to increase believability Slow motion on gun throw – suggests importance of this moment as a turning point in the fight Shot reverse shot on Nick and Butterman after the car door flip to show their reactions to Butterman joining the fight. This makes us happy

Q3 - Representation Pensioners are gossips (walkie-talkies) - ST Pensioners are violent (gunfight, fire first) – NST Adults are aggressive (gunfight) – ST Adults are morally good (taking down the antagonists) – ST Teenagers are vandalous (spray paint) – ST Teenagers are morally good (aid the police, nod head for ‘something useful’) - NST
