Le Aéroport du Grand Ouest, is bigger better? Mediation Le Aeroport du GRand Ouest, is bigger better? My mediation on the new airport being built in Nantes France. By: Kathleen Hackett

Nantes France Northwest part of France Built along the Loire River Capitol of Pays de la Loire Surrounded by farmland Offers water sports to everyone A little background information about Nantes; -It is in the Northwest region of France, built along the Loire River. -It’s the Capitol of Pays de la Loire (which is the northwest region of France. -It is surrounded by fertile farmland. - and it offers water sports to both tourist and locals on the river.

The New Airport (Le Aéroport du Grand Ouest) The airport has been discussed for 30 years Construction starting in 2014 ending in 2017 Will serve 9 million people by 2050 -The New Airport. (Le Aeroport du Grand Ouest means the Grand aiport of the west) -The Franch government has been discussing this airport for 30 years. -Just decided that the construction will begin in 2014 and end in 2017 -The french government is hoping that this new airport will have 9 million passengers by the year 2050. -There is also very fertile farmland directly around this airport site

Current Airport (Nantes Atlantique Airport) One of the fastest growing airports in France 3 million passengers a year 2010-2011 passenger number increased by 7.1 percent -Nantes current airport is one of France’s fastest growing airports. -It has served and is currently serving 3 million passengers a year -And that number has increased in one year by 7.1% in 2010

Pros & Cons Pros: Cons: Easier travel Bigger airport Nantes City flourishes Cons: Noise pollution Airport takes over farmland Nantes city run over by tourist -Pro and Cons of this issue -Pros: -Easier travel, not having to transfer in paris and passengers would have a shorter travel time. -Bigger airport means 2 air stripes and that equals more places to travel -Nantes City flourishes which means more people and more revenue for the city Cons: -Noise pollution - more plans for easier travel which means more noise and the city and farmers are not used to that. -This airport takes farmland from the farmers who may have had for centuries or decades. -Nantes city is over run by tourists. Residents are afraid that they will lose their small town feel. -A story I read was about an organic bread maker that would put out organic bread every 2 weeks to all the near by residents but now the airport has knocked down that shop.

Mediation Noise pollution kept to certain times Farmers compensated for farmland that was lost Mediation My mediation. _Noise pollution should be kept to a minimum, they shouldn’t have late night and early morning planes flying in or out so the farmers can get their sleep. -The farmers can also be compensated for the farmland that they lost. Either over a certain amount of years or in one lump sum.

Mediation Cont. Placing plaques about Nantes history in the city Keeping the chain restaurants and hotels out of the inner city -You cannot stop people from traveling to Nantes but you could place plaques around Nantes to educate the tourists of the traditions or rituals that the natives do. They should do this so the tourists are not walking around gawking about everything. -The government in Nantes should keep all big chain hotels or resturaunts out of the inner city of Nantes so the inner city can be saved for the smaller businesses. Keeping Nantes the small town it wants to be.
