Prepositional Phrases

 We talked about prepositions during the first unit, parts of speech.

 Prepositions are always a part of a prepositional phrase.  The phrase consists of the preposition, the object of the preposition, and any modifiers of that object

Examples  Tom Simpson of the Minnesota Science Museum is going to visit the Smithsonian to learn more about it.

Be careful!  Don’t mix up a prepositional phrase that starts with the word “to” and an infinitive phrase starting with the word “to”.  A prepositional phrase starts with preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun.  Example – We gave the present to Sarah.  Infinitive phrase starts with “to” and ends with a verb looking word  Example – Igor liked to run around the yard.

Don’t get confused  Sometimes prepositional phrase is combined with a noun to form a compound noun. NOT A PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE  Examples – Meals on Wheels  Helen of Troy
