(With the same denominator) Miss Pontt Year 5 Maths

 There are three Steps to adding fractions: - Make sure the denominators are the same - add the numerators (the top numbers) and put the answer over the denominator - Simplify the fraction (if needed)

 At this stage we are going to focus on the second step: adding the numerator and putting it over the denominator: so for example: 2/5+ 1/5=3/5

 Copy the following into your book: 1/6+3/6=3/8+4/8= 2/16+10/16=14/20+2/20= 16/34+10/34=52/100+22/100= 5/10+3/10=1/3+1/3= 45/60+2/60=2/33+7/33

Now, think of how many ways you can write a fraction; for example ½ can be 3/6 or 4/8 or 5/10 To do this, you times (X) the nominator and the denominator by the same number 1 (x2) 2 __ = __ 2 (x2) 4

Copy and complete the following table 1/22/43/64/85/10 1/32/65/15 1/44/16 1/52/10 1/63/18 1/72/145/35 1/84/32 1/92/18 1/103/305/50

 After you have added a fraction, check to see if you can simplify it,  Remember: both the top AND the bottom number need to be divided by the same number to simplify it, if you cant, the fraction cant be simplified! For example: 2/4 can be simplified to ½ because both the numerator and the denominator can be divided by two ¾ cannot be simplified because both numbers can only be divided by 1

 When adding fractions, the answer may be a improper fraction. Copy and answer the following questions:  REMEMBER: A improper fraction is when the numerator is bigger than the denominator. 3/4+2/4=7/8+4/8= 6/7+3/7=34/32+19/32= 12/4+8/4=12/14+7/14=

 When adding fraction where the answer is a improper fraction, simplify the answer to a mixed number, for example: 2/3+2/3= 4/3 4/3= 1 and 1/3  Copy and complete the following, making the answers into mixed numbers 3/4+2/4=17/5+6/5=13/14+3/14= 16/16+2/16=1/2+1/2=12/32+8/32=
