Monthly Status Review Wednesday, January 18, 2012 LPW/EUV Jim Westfall PM & Will Thompson SE Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics University of Colorado at Boulder

LPW Team

Overview DFB/BEB EM3 testing continues to look good –Slight delay after first of the year due to slow payment of invoices by University – this is has been corrected and contractor is back at work FPGA performance is good, stable, and essentially ready for flight burn –Reviews are complete –Waiting concurrence of RFAs EUV is in flight build –Detector assemblies in process –Aperture housing in assembly –Detector housing in assembly

Schedule Deliver to SSL –EM3 BEB/DFB When SSL ready –FM BEB/DFB 29 February 2012 –FM EUV 16 April 2012 Assay Dates –FM BEB/DFB 9 February 2012 –FM EUV 9 February 2012

Recent Significant Accomplishments Flight Model DFB & BEB –DFB and BEB have completed assembly at JPL and are back at LASP for the next steps Flight Model EUV Electronics Boards –Completed assembly at LASP “EM#3” DFB & BEB boards –Implemented 2x weekly status meetings in the lab to stay on top of progress and performance verification questions –Completing bench testing of analog and digital sections –Small number of open items remain All mechanical fabrication for FM DFB/BEB and EUV have been completed with only a little plating remaining –Waiting for electrical test and harness assembly to complete

DFB/BEB EM3 Testing EM3 BEB/DFB testing looks good with small number of open items –HF channel shows unexpected frequency response most likely due to board layout parasitic capacitance To date we still have identified only two modifications that we will be implemented on the FM boards (white wires) –4 wire jumper to correct BEB to DFB input loading problem –Addition of 2 diodes in BEB clipping circuit –Not yet certain if change will be made to DFB HF Channel though this is can very likely be corrected with a component change All FPGA functionality has been tested and meets requirements except Preamp Relay protection –Added in case relay doesn’t change states when commanded –Method for sensing a missed relay flip not as obvious as hoped

DFB/BEB Mechanical DFB and BEB Mechanical Frames have been manufactured –Working on clarification with SSL of one hole dimension (depth) prior to going to plating Once plated they are ready for assembly with FM DFB and BEB

DFB FPGA Status FPGA design review with GSFC FPGA experts was held on December 22 nd –No new actions –All old actions have been submitted to the reviewers 1 RFA not submitted related to creation of specification that was not planned –We are aware of no open actions and no reason not to burn the flight FPGAs when the DFB is ready Have not received concurrence from FPGA reviewers on submitted actions Bottom line – the FPGA is ready to go!

LPW-SSL Current Status – Boom/Sensor G. Delory, S. Harris, J. McCauley MAVEN QSR Jan

LPW-SSL Current Status – Boom/Sensor Goal for past quarter was to complete FM assembly by mid-December, with a possible slip to January –FM assembly has slipped to end of January due to late deliveries/closures of various vendors –~50% of mechanical parts delivered and ready for boom assembly and test –~10% of mechanical parts for preamp assembly delivered All flight electrical parts in and kitted

LPW-SSL Current Status – Boom/Sensor Additional tests of EM conducted to determine low-end sensitivity and high impedance measurement capability Results thus far continue to meet requirements FM assembly and test flow developed, under revision/review

LPW-SSL Current Status – Whip Coating Last quarter it was determined that whip coating cracks during vibration –Analysis carried out; determined that a 2” reduction in whip length (from 50 to 45 cm) drastically reduces stress on the coating –Samples vibrated to simulate stress on a 45 cm whip sample –Coating from these samples currently out for SEM/surface characterization (results due 1/18 – today) At present, a 2” reduction in whip length is planned. Further decisions deferred until surface analysis is completed

LPW-SSL Plans for Next Quarter Complete assembly of the FM boom/sensor Boom FM build & deployment tests Goal: integrated LPW boom/sensor assembled by end of January/beginning of February Finalize test and cal plan for FM, ATLO, and begin implementation –In progress now Continue tests of integrated EM instrument w/electronics from LASP –Validate lessons learned/changes from previous EM tests

EUV Status - Mechanical All the FAIs have been completed, released, and are ready for production All EUV FM machining and plating has been completed Aperture housing mechanical assembly is complete up to installation of harnesses Detector housing mechanical assembly is complete up to installation of harnesses

EUV Status - Electrical Diode and Mother Board Status –Diode PWBAs are complete and ready for next assembly –Mother Board PWBA is complete and ready polymerics Harness work in progress –Motor harness for aperture mechanism is complete –Heater harness is in production at GSFC and should complete before the end of next week –Door actuator harness is in production at GSFC and should complete before the end of next week –Flex circuit harness is in production at GSFC and should complete before the end of next week Aperture Position GSE –Design and layout are complete and the board is out for assembly Due back in 3 to 4 weeks –Working with LM to accommodate this assembly during ATLO LM has reviewed STEP files of EUV with GSE mounted but we need additional conversations – will work on this in January so no impacts on EUV MICD discussion in February

Current RFA Status FPGA Peer Review Currently working and coordinating open actions with GSFC –Awaiting Goddard concurrence to close
