What is speed and how is it measured? In the simplest interpretation, speed is the distance traveled divided by the time taken.

Some Examples Here I am walking at a speed of 1 meter per second (1m/s) In 10 seconds I would walk how many meters? I would walk 10 meters if I walk at 1m/s for 10 seconds.

Some Examples Here I am walking at a speed of 3 meter per second (3m/s) In 10 seconds I would walk how many meters? I would walk 30 meters if I walk at 3m/s for 10 seconds.

Calculating Speed If you know two of the variables you should be able to find the missing value d = v t distance is equal to velocity multiplied by time t = d/v time is equal to distance divided by velocity

An airplane is flying at a constant speed of 150 meters per second. After one hour, how far has the plane traveled?

Five step process 1.Identify what the problem is asking for 2.Write down what you are given 3.Write down any relationships you know that involve any of the information you are asked or given 4.Pick which relationship to start with and try to arrange it to get the variable you want on the left- hand side of the equal sign 5.Plug in the numbers and solve the equation We need to find distance We are given time and speed v = d/t, and 1 hour = 23,600 seconds d= v t d= v t ( 150 m/sec) x (3,600 sec) 540,000 meters 540 kilometers

Wait Wait, how do you do these time conversions? 1 hour = 3, 600 sec 1 day = 86, 400 sec 1 year = 31, 556, 26 1 meter = 1,000 mm 1 kilometer = 1, 000, 00 mm Dimensional Analysis dog to the rescue!

Dimensional Analysis or Unit Conversion its all the same! When in doubt -- don’t scream and shout – do Unit Conversion and then your out! How many seconds are there is one month with 30 days? Well, there are 24 hours in one day There are 60 minutes in one hour and there are 60 seconds in one minute

More on Unit Conversion You can use Unit Conversion to change (convert) from any unit into another! The next side will show you some common units of speed
