Measurement Goal 2: Time and Temperature 2.01: Estimate the measure of an object in one system given the measure of that object in another system.

Units of Time 60 seconds (sec) = 1 minute (min) 60 minutes (min) = 1 hour (hr) 24 hours (hr) = 1 day 7 days = 1 week (wk) About 52 weeks (wk) = 1 year (yr) 365 days = 1 year (yr) 366 days = 1 leap year 10 years (yr) = 1 decade 100 years (yr) = 1 century 1,000 years (yr) = 1 millennium

Using Technology Determine how old you will be on your next birthday: (Rounded to the nearest year) Using “Excel” to set up a spreadsheet. Label rows: years, months, weeks, days, hours and minutes. Insert formulas using your notes from your notebook. Calculate your age. What about Mom and Dad? Be sure to add a “header (title) and a footer ( your name)”. Print your results.

Finding Elapsed Time Naomi wants to run 5 m in less than 1 ¾ hours. If she starts her run at 10:47 A.M. and runs 5 m by 12:26 P.M., has she reached her goal? One Way; Use the Clock Count forward on the clock from starting time to the ending time. Another way; Use subtraction 12 hr 26 min = 11 hr 86 min 11 hr 86 min 12 hr 26 min ending time 10 hr 47 min starting time 1 hr 39 min Total time

Using a Calendar- Elapsed Time You can use a calendar to find elapsed time: Count the whole days from 10:00 P.M. September 16 to 10:00 P.M. September 18 A B Count the number of weeks from 2:00A.M. April 3 to 2:00 A.M. April 24.

Check 1.Explain how to use a clock to find the elapsed time between 3:00 P.M. Wednesday and 1:00 P.M. Thursday. 2. Start: 4:30 P.M., elapsed time 45 min, End Time:??? 3.5 hr 10 min plus 2 hr 45 min 4.8 hr 11 min minus 3 hr 24 min 5.Start: June 11, 9:00 p.m. ??? Time has elapsed, End: June 16, 5:30 p.m. 6.1 hr 50 min plus 3 hr 22 min 7.5 hr 15 min minus 3 hr 35 min 8.Start: ????, 25 min elapsed time, end: 8:00 p.m.

Your Daily Schedule Create a table to display our daily schedule using the following information. Be sure to give starting times, ending times and elapsed time: Math: 8:20, 1 hr excluding the 5 min warning Encore: the end of Math, last 55 minutes Snack: 15 min including bathroom break Writing: last 45 minutes and must 11:15 Recess: on Tues/Wed -10 min, if PE and 15 min –no PE Reading: usually last 1 hr and 10 minutes, depending on Recess, but must 12:35 Lunch: 12:40 and 1:10 Recess: Mon/Thurs/Frid-10 min, if no PE and 15 min-no PE SuccessMaker: Tuesday/Wed 1:15 and last 30 minutes Media: every other Monday- last 20 min Guidance: the first and third Thursday 1:15-2:00 Science/Social Studies- depends on the day of the work. Needs to 2:35 so Pre-K helpers can pack up to leave. Wildcat Roars: 2:50- car riders Bell rings: 2:55- bus riders

Measuring Temperature Temperature is measured in degrees Fahrenheit (°F) in the customary system and in degrees Celsius (°C) in the metric system. Boiling H20 H20 Freezes Comfortable Room temperature

Check Choose the temperature that is the better estimate. 1.A glass of H20- 34°F or 34°C 2.A classroom- 23°F or 23°C 3.A bowl of hot stew- 80°F or 80°C What is the difference in the temperature change: 4.25° F to 41°F 5.-5°C to -20°C 6.45°F to 20°C

Real World Connection Your job for the week is to record the temperature during the day. You will need to devise a way to record your data. I will use the Weather Channel to provide you with the data. The times will be: 8:00 a.m. 10:30 am 12:30 pm 2:30 pm You will need to graph your data, give the average temperature of the day and the mean for the week. Going Green: Your job is to record the room the same times as listed above.
