A LOOK AT THE RESOURCE Presented by the ULM Library Reference Department

Session Overview  What *IS* it, exactly?  What can I use it for?  What does it do?  Here’s how it works  Getting to it from home  Questions?

What *IS* It, Exactly?  JSTOR is a searchable collection of scholarly resources from journals and books  JSTOR holdings go back to the mid-1800s and feature up-to-date resources as well  It’s multidisciplinary, covering arts, humanities, social sciences, and sciences, and everything in between  It features full-text articles, meaning you can access the entirety of a resource

What Can I Use It For?  JSTOR can provide you with articles and books that are appropriate for research  JSTOR resources are scholarly, meaning they’ve been through peer-review (checked by experts)  These resources are appropriate for inclusion in your research, because they are founded in research  It can provide a good historical look at issues and topics, since the holdings go back so far

What Does It Do?  You can conduct keyword searches (simple and advanced searches)  OR browse by general subject areas  OR browse by specific subject areas  You can also browse by resource titles  Resources can be downloaded or printed  You can yourself citations (unformatted)

Here’s How It Works In order to access the database, you’ll need to start with the Library’s homepage – so that’s where we’ll start, so you can see JSTOR in action:

Getting To It From Home  Most of the Library’s electronic resources can be accessed remotely – that is, from places other than campus or the Library – via the website  However, in order to use the resources, you’ll have to login  Your login information is very simple:  Username: Campus Wide ID (CWID)  Password: MMYY  JSTOR is one of the resources that can be accessed from off-campus
