Dog Dreaming at Alekarenge Dog

We are the dogs of Alekarenge. This is Dog Dreaming Country. Our families have been here forever.

“Every day I lie in the shade at school and dream that I can read” said Blackie. “Life is so boring when the kids are not here to play with. If I could read, I would read all the books about dogs”.

“Such wonderful story books”

One day the dogs saw a book with pictures of other dogs in a school. “That would be so good “ they said.

But there is a big sign that says: No Dogs In Classrooms.

“We go to school every day. 100% attendance” said Whitey

Whitey and Snoopy catch the bus to school each day. “Nearly there” barks Snoopy.

“We line up with the little kids, but Kate does not let us in. It is no fun outside” said Scruffy sadly.

Jayden went into the READ Room, but Scruffy stayed outside. He knew: “No dogs in classrooms”

Another dog tried to read. “It is too hard. I can’t read” he moaned. “Please will you teach me to read?” he asked.

The dog put his paw under the first letter. W…w…w… Then w-oo, w-oo, w-oo…. “Wood, wood” he yelped. “No, that’s not right.” “Wool, wool” he tried again. “No, no!”

Then he tracked the letters with his nose right to the last letter ‘f’. “W-oo-f. W-oo-f. Woof woof!” he barked excitedly. “I can read! I can read! But now I want to read more”.

“I want to read the dog food bags. Is it Mince and Vegetables or Chicken and Rice?”

“I want to read stories to my puppies” said the Mother Dog.

So all the dogs had a meeting at the Council room. “It’s not fair”, they said. “We all want to learn to read”.

But the man at the Council said: “Go and ask the Principal”. So Princess asked Iris to come with her to see the Principal of the school.

So the dogs all went to see Stephen, the Principal, and said “We all want to learn to read”.

“That is too hard. Dogs can’t read” said Stephen, “but we will teach the children to be very good readers and then they can read to you all at home”.

Hyena still wanted to learn to read himself, but he has to admit he does like it when LT’s grandchildren read to him at home because he finds it very hard to turn the pages.

Now the children all read at home to their families and their dogs, so everyone is happy. But some of the dogs still dream of reading…. “Does it say…frog?..” asked Scruffy.
