  Instruments are typically made out of:  Wood  Gourds  Turtle shells   Animal horns and hides  Instruments may be made from recycled materials such as scrap metal from old cars or oil drums Materials

 Kalimba  Treble, Alto, Celeste, African  Common in Sub-Saharan Africa  Played by holding the instrument in the hands and plucking the tines with the thumbs  Made from wood, bamboo, metal

  Hybrid handcrafted instrument based on traditional xylophones from Mozambique and Malawi  Piccolo, soprano, tenor, baritone  Wooden bars struck with mallets Marimba

  Moropa, Ngoma, Djembe, water drums  Originated from central and western Africa  Made from wood, clay pots, turtle shells , gourds  Can be 10 ft. tall or small enough to be held in one hand Drums
