TODAY’S AGENDA: Scientific Method(10) Experiment Design (25) Experiment(20) 15AugustTh Today’ objectives: 1.Identify the parts of the scientific method ESLRs Addressed: 1. Achieve Academic proficiency 2. Communicate Effectively 3. Demonstrate Civility

Warm Up 1.What are the 6 steps to the scientific method? A___ M_____ F____ T____ A_____ D______

Scientific Method Experiment Design You are going to be designing an experiment using King Worms. You must “Ask a question.” YOU CAN”T KILL IT OR HARM IT!!!!!! Example Questions: 1.Does the size of a worm affect how fast it crawls? 2.Does a king worm prefer bread or an apple to eat? 3.Does a king worm prefer light or dark? You then must design an experiment to test this. I have a ton of supplies in the room. If there’s something specific you want, ASK. I may have it.

Scientific Method Experiment Design You then must design an experiment to test this. I have a ton of supplies in the room. If there’s something specific you want, ASK. I may have it. Example Questions: Q. Does the size of a worm affect how fast it crawls? E: Take two worms, one small and one large, set them both at the same location. Let them move around all they want in a set amount of time. Measure how far they moved from their starting point. Q. Does a king worm prefer bread or an apple to eat? E: put a piece of bread on one side of container and an apple on the other. Place 2-3 worms in the middle. In 5-10 minutes come back and count which piece has more worms around it. Q. Does a king worm prefer light or dark? E: Create a container that is ½ light and ½ dark. Place a few worms in the container. Come back in 5-10 minutes and record location of the worms.

Scientific Method Experiment Design Finally, you MUST collect some form of data. Example Questions: Q. Does the size of a worm affect how fast it crawls? A: Take two worms, one small and one large, set them both at the same location.

Scientific Method Experiment Design What I want you to do… 1.Write your question. 2.Form a hypothesis. EX: If __________ Then_______________ 3.Decide how you are going to perform your experiment. Run it by me real quick. As long as it doesn’t kill the worm, it’ll probably be ok.. 4.Decide which type of data you are going to collect and how you are going to collect it.
