NGSS: What is it? Next Generation Science Standards The National Research Council convened a team of education experts to answer this question. In July 2011, the team published the Framework on K–12 Science Education. The Framework calls for a full integration of the practices of science and engineering with the ideas and concepts. That is, students should learn the ideas of science through actually doing science.

NGSS: How is it different than Common Core? NGSS does NOT equal a label - a curriculum redesign is required. Crosscutting concepts means across topics AND disciplines a more fully Integrated Science approach. A greater focus on DEPTH as opposed to breadth The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) will mark a major paradigm shift in U.S. science education.

Are we there yet? NO! NO!

NGSS: Timing? – TODAY: Release of first public draft of NGSS at 3 PM (eastern) – Summer/Fall 2012: Release of second public draft of NGSS. – By Spring of 2013, the Next Generation Science Standards will be released for adoption. – Assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards are proposed to be released after the final draft of the NGSS standards.
