Scientific Methods – Chapter 1. A little confusing!
What is Science?. Science is a process we use to answer questions about what we OBSERVE.
Date: August 28, 2014 Page: Table of Contents p.1 W.O.D: Last 5 pages Warm-ups: Front Cover W.O.D: Inference – The act of reasoning and drawing conclusions.
Science in our World.
Science is a way of knowing.
Scientific Method.
1. Hypothesis A possible explanation or answer to the question 2. Independent (manipulated) Variable 3.Dependent (responding) Variable 4. Controlled Variables.

The Science of Biology. Science as Inquiry How is biology defined? The scientific study of life. Inquiry is at the heart of science. Scientific inquiry.
Quiz 1 - Scientific Processing
I. Making Observations- Observations can be made several different ways. Observations can be put into two different categories; qualitative and quantitative.
1. Prediction: to tell something before it happens 2. Hypothesis: a possible answer to a question based on gathered information.

The Nature of Science and The Scientific Method. What is Science SCIENCE IS….. a way in which answers related to NATURAL events are proposed a way in.
DO NOW What Is Science?? - In your own words, write down any ideas or thoughts to explain what science is all about! -Take out homework if you did not.
What is Science?. Observing Using one or more of your senses to gather information. –Senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell.
Observation & Inference. Observations Any information collected with the senses. Quantitative – measureable or countable »3 meters long »4 marbles »50.
The nature of science. Scientific knowledge is the product of observation and inference. Observations and Inferences.
Get to work… 1.First, you might have a new seat. Check the roster on the bulletin board. 2.Pick up your graded diagnostic test answer sheet from the table.

How is Science Done? Pages 24 & 25: Scientists make quantitative and qualitative observations. They then make inferences based on those observations. They use the observations as empirical evidence.

Vocabulary … 1)Number pages 26 through 50 in your ISN. 2)Vocabulary for this unit will go on pages 32 and 33. 3)Add “vocabulary” to the table of contents. 4)Label the tops of pages 32 and 33 “Unit 1 Vocabulary.”

Vocabulary … Observation : any information collected with the senses. When we observe, we record what is seen, smelled, tasted, heard and touched. Qualitative : is a description of something's properties. It can't be measured. "The apple is red." Quantitative : is a measureable description using quantity or amount. “The apple weighs 125 grams.” “There are three apples.” Inference : a conclusion based on observations. Inferences go beyond what we can directly sense. You use experience, reasoning and logic to make an inference. Empirical evidence : information acquired by observation or experimentation.
