WHAT IS CULTURE? The behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, country or age group.
So, then, what is dining etiquette culture? The ways in which a particular country behaves or are believed to behave while dining.
Let the battle Begin… In the next slides we will tell about various countries and the dining etiquette culture they exhibit in comparison to America.
In this Corner… AMERICA Eat raw vegetables (for example: celery, carrots, and cucumbers CHINA Do not eat raw vegetables (always disinfect the vegetables by boiling them first)
Another Example… AMERICA Do not slurp soup CHINA Slurp soup in order to cool and show appreciation of the food. JAPAN Rude to slurp your soup
Example 3 SPAIN Breakfast is the least important meal of the day Don't expect to dine before 8:30pm; supper commonly begins at 10 P.M.: and don't expect to eat lunch at noon AMERICA AND FINLAND Breakfast is the most important meal of the day; usual lunchtime is between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. And dinner is often between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Example 4 America Have different courses (appetizers, main dish, and dessert) Japanese Meals are usually served all at once. Europe salads served after, rather than before, the main dish.
My final example… Indonesia, China, and Japan Eat rice every day America Although we may enjoy rice, it is not something we eat on a daily basis or as part of every meal.
