AVIATION RULES Miscellaneous Rules while flying Forbidden Reckless or negligent flying Dropping of articles – except to save life (some exceptions) Picking up or towing – unless allowed by a/cs C of A Acrobatic flight – except in uncontrolled airspace ( IAA may authorize in controlled airspace) - not a hazard to other air traffic Students (esp solo flight) to be a hazard to other aircraft, people or property (instructor responsibility)

3. AVIATION RULES Collisions and Right of Way Rules-1 An aircraft shall not be operated close enough to another aircraft to create a collision hazard Collision Avoidance on VFR flights is pilots responsibility Collision Avoidance on IFR flights is ATCs responsibility Right Hand Rule – when following a linear feature e.g. railway, keep to the right Formation flying can only be done with prior agreement of all the pilots Needs ATC clearance in controlled airspace Simulated Instrument Flight – dual controls - qualified safety pilot with good all- round view - inform ATC of practice IR approach (for PPL flight test only 180° level turn under hood required)

3. AVIATION RULES Collision Avoidance and Right of Way Rules - 2 Manoeuvrability Priority (MORE gives way to LESS) Power-driven heavier than air a/cs give way to Power-driven heavier than air a/cs when towing give way to Airships give way to Gliders give way to Balloons

AVIATION RULES Collision Avoidance and Right of Way Rules - 3 Position Priority An a/c compelled to land (emergency) has priority over everyone Landing aircraft on finals has priority over a/c taking off If two a/cs are on finals the lower has priority (but must not cut-in) When overtaking, the a/c being overtaken has priority (overtaking a/c should pass on RIGHT) Two a/c approaching head-on NEITHER has priority (both turn right) Taxiing - Two a/cs approaching head-on NEITHER has priority (both turn right) Two a/c approaching at an angle the a/c on the right has priority When overtaking, the a/c being overtaken has priority (overtaking a/c should pass on LEFT)

3. AVIATION RULES Night & Lights - 4 Night 1 April – 30 September. 1/2hr before sunrise – 1/2hr after sunset 1 October – 31 March. Sunrise – sunset Lights Day - anticollision light (red or white strobe) should be on while engine running Night – anticollision light Red light on port (left) wingtip ) both visible from Green light on starboard (right) wingtip ) front and 110° each side White light in centre of tailplane, visible from behind for 70° to left and right
