STEP- SRN SELI

Jean Piaget Lived 1896 to 1980 Originally trained in biology became a geneticist Believed that the difference between animals and humans is the ability to do abstract symbolic reasoning His views are similar to vygotsky’s Discovered or believed that young children think qualitatively different than older children. Came up with stage-like theory of cognitive development

Process of cognative developement How behavior is controlled through the creation of mental schemes to represent the world. The process of equilibrium and disequilibium is the way that we learn. Infants are born with reflexive schemes but Throughout the stages these are replaced with constructive schemes. Youth creates schemes through assimilation and accomodation. Schemes become increasingly more complex throughout life.

Stages of Developement

Jane Elliot Born 1933 American teacher Antiracism activist. Had no formal training in psychology. Created brown eye/blue eye the day after martin luther kings death in her first grade class. Became a diversity trainer. Received the national mental health association award for excellence in education. Her series of videos exposes biased on arbitrary factors such as dress, color of eyes/ skin and so forth.

Blue Eyed/ Brown Eyed Experiment She realized that her students weren't going to understand diversity so she took the arbitrary components like eye color and explained to the class why one color is better than another. She also made examples of students based on their negative behaviors and related it towards their eye color. The students that she chose to be better actually started performing better and the other students performed worse since they thought they were discriminated against.

Relating the previous slide to why it is relevant now.
