Many inventions of the Scientific Revolution began to change the way people worked and lived all across Europe. People began relying on and using new machines to perform jobs once done by humans.

Machines were built and grouped together to make products in large factories. The factories were being built in the cities so, in turn, people were moving from the countryside to the city in search of jobs.

The Industrial Revolution began in England in the late 1700s. Their factories, which were powered by steam, mainly produced textiles, or products made of cloth.

The Industrial Revolution created a labor force in the cities. Labor force- a need, or demand, for workers.

Most workers could earn more income working in a factory than on a farm. Still the pay was very low. Factory workers would normally work hours a day, six days a week. >

In the mid 1800s, women and children made up more than 75% of all textile factory workers. Children started working as young as seven years old.

The textile industry in England was developing into a system known as capitalism. Capitalism- a system where factories and other businesses are privately owned.

During the 1800’s industrialization was spreading from England into other European countries and the United States.

Cities in these countries grew at fast rates as well, which made them more crowded and dirtier. These cities began facing the same problems as England in terms of pollution and disease caused by these factories.
