Farel in Geneva (1534) 3

The Top Ten Events Did you notice the irritating red letters on the previous slide? What do they spell? T…U…R…K…S! The Turks were a force with which to be reckoned in the 16 th century. Both emperor and pope had one eye on the enemy as a “wild boar” in little Wittenberg, Saxony (modern day Germany) continued to teach and write about the truth he was seeing in the Word of God and the errors he was witnessing in his church. 4

The Top Ten Events The abuses in practices and the errors in theology within the Roman Catholic Church (500 A.D A.D.). 5

The Top Ten Events Comments on the video: Did you notice how the speaker placed The Roman Catholic Church above Scripture? That approach has been used by the Roman Church for hundreds of years. It was held in the Middle Ages, and is one of the reasons for the Protestant Reformation. How does the view fit with the Old Testament—a Jewish religious document which was completed hundreds of years before the Roman Church? 8

The Top Ten Events Comments on the video: I marvel at the productivity of men like Luther, Calvin and Edwards! I so want to be faithful in my ministry! I often used Calvin’s commentaries or his Institutes in my preparations to preach and/or teach. Like all of the Lutheran and Reformed teachers and pastors, John Calvin was committed to the study and proclamation of the God’s Word. 23

The Top Ten Events The publication of Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion (1536 [Latin], 1541 [French]) 24

The Top Ten Events So what? 25

The Top Ten Events Encouragements: Read a good biography of Martin Luther. Watch the most recent Luther movie (2003 [Joseph Fiennes playing the role of Luther]). THIS WEEK (Monday is Reformation Day)! Read a little bit of Calvin (the web is filled with Calvin quotes). It is edifying (spiritually helpful)! Be sure to submit your thinking and you living to the Word of God. Be willing to adjust both as God reveals more to you from the reading and study of His Word. 26
