PARCC Parent Presentation Morgan Elementary Ms. Regina McIntyre, Principal Mrs. Cathy Krajcsovics, Data Coach Mrs. Tina Sanger, Basic Skills Teacher (Adapted from South Brunswick School District – Monmouth Junction, NJ)

Agenda ▪Introductions ▪PARCC Overview ▪District Resources ▪Test Nav 8 Tutorial ▪Question & Answer

What is PARCC? ▪The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers ▪Innovative 21 st century, technology-based assessments ▪The PARCC assessments are directly aligned to the Common Core State Standards ▪Content will include English Language Arts and Mathematics ▪Provide educators valuable data throughout the year for accountability, measures of growth, and to inform instruction

What are we doing to prepare our students? ▪Aligning curriculum – common core (3 years), K-5 ELA and Math ▪Instructing Students – Benchmark Assessments – Keyboarding Without Tears – Study Island ▪PARCC Video Tutorials and Practice Tests ▪Teachers familiarize students with the types of questions they will encounter on the PARCC ▪Ongoing professional development for teachers and administrators

What is Hamilton Township School District doing to prepare for PARCC? The administrative team created a committee to prepare for the PARCC assessment: ▪ Conducted ongoing trainings and workshops for teachers and administrators beginning last year ▪ Field testing as a pilot school district for PARCC administration ▪ Purchasing hardware and software: Laptops, Mice, Headphones, Laptop carts ▪ Preparing the infrastructure: wireless campus, bandwidth

PARCC Design ▪PARCC assesses two formal times during the school year: 75% and 90% ▪Performance Based Assessments (PBA) ▪End of Year Assessments (EOY) ▪ Scoring – 5 Levels of performance: Level 1 represents lowest performing and Level 5 represents highest performing ▪Different from NJASK in that PARCC is an online assessment and is given during two testing windows

PARCC Lingo ▪Prose Constructed Response (PCR) – Writing Task (write about reading, narratives, research) ▪Technology Enhanced Constructed Response (TECR) – Drag & drop, select/deselect, highlight ▪Evidence Based Selected Response (EBSR) – Multiple Choice

Differences: March vs. May March (PBA) - 75% through the year May (EOY) - 90% through the year Math reasoning and modeling questions require both short & extended responses (explanations - why is this wrong?) understanding of math concepts mathematical fluency Language Arts reading comprehension writing grounded in reading (literary analysis, ‘research simulation’ - argument with evidence, narrative) reading comprehension

How can I help my child? ▪Relax and stay positive…if you seem nervous, they will notice and may become nervous too ▪Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep ▪Each testing morning, provide a good healthy and hearty breakfast for your child ▪Make sure they are wearing comfortable clothes that will not leave them too hot or cold ▪Encourage them to their best…that is all they can do!

Parent/Student Resources NOW THAT YOU HAVE AN OVERVIEW OF THE PARCC ASSESSMENT, LET’S REVIEW THE PARCC TUTORIAL – TEST NAV 8
