Television has changed significantly over the past 100 years. The first invention of a television was in 1926, by John Baird, it was called a “Mechanical Television”, his system was mechanical and used a rotating disc to scan an image with 30 lines of resolution. John was the first person in the world to demonstrate a fully functioning television system. In 1927 a man named Philo Farnsworth created an electric television system complete with a receiver and camera. In 1950 colour television is finally released to the public. In 1969 Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon and the whole world saw through their television sets. The TV revolution had begun. In 1997 Developers at Panasonic developed and released the flat screen TV. It quickly took over the TV market. In 2009 people stared making the switch to all digital television. Television has really changed over the years starting from black and white to coloured television sets. The number of people owning the television has also increased rapidly.

Then to now

Positive Effects Helps people to learn about other cultures Gives family members of all ages an opportunity to spend time together while watching it Parents can use TV to get kids reading by getting books on the same subjects Parents and children can talk about TV programs Educational programs can teach us new things. news, current events and historical programs can help us find out more about other cultures and people and whats happening around the world. Documentaries can teach people things Cultural programs can show us the world of music and art A source of entertainment Supply’s people with jobs in the television industry

Negative Effects There is no educational benefit for children under the age of 2 to watch television. Watching television at this age can actually hamper a child's brain development because it detracts from time that could be given to educational activities. People become lazy and also can become overweight from watching to much TV. Cost People can become very anti-social from watching to much TV People become obsessed Could loose sleep from watching too much TV Not everyone around the world can access it

Television is a very common trend in most households in Australia, we are a very fortunate country to be able to have access to Television unlike some other third world countries, that yet don’t even have access to clean water let alone a Television. According to statistics in 2012 people in Australia aged 65 plus spent the most monthly viewing minutes watching Television out of all age groups and the lowest age group being those aged In 2013 the statistics didn’t change much, the viewing of TV just dropped as a whole.

Like all things electrical the television functions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Television uses radio waves which are the largest sector of the EMS Chart. Radio waves travel at the speed of light like all other electromagnetic waves. The distance a radio wave travels in one second, in a vacuum, is 299,792,458 meters (983,571,056 ft) which is the wavelength of a 1 hertz radio signal. But how are the radio waves connected to your TV? Televisions use many different radio signals to transmit a particular channel and then block out the rest of the channels without interference. This means that each channel uses different frequencies for the television to receive the information of images and sound. This works by sending electromagnetic waves and converting pixels and audio into recognisable images and sounds. Television receive most of the channels by the use of antennas. The radio waves are transmitted to the antennas by high a frequency of MHZ from T.V stations, allowing the viewer to watch programmes without interference. The signal is the sent through a cable into the television.

Electromagnetic Spectrum

The input energy is electrical and the Television then transfers this into heat, light and sound, these three things are known as output energy's. The electrical energy is transported through the radio waves. Radio waves are transported through satellites in the area. The light which is an output from the television allows us too see images whilst the sound that is also an output from the television which is emitted to the TV’s speakers which then makes sound, this allows us to hear what is being said on the television.

In this diagram, it shows how energy is transferred from one object to another A: Sun, source of solar energy. It transfers thermal (heat) and light energy to plants, humans and animals. B: River, streams and waterfalls moving downstream are all a source or water energy (Hydropower). They are a store of kinetic energy by their movement downstream. Waterfalls also have gravitational energy. C: Thermal and light energy from the sun is stored in plants as chemical and potential energy. When humans eat (plants) the stored energy is transferred to us. We use this energy to do work. D: Heat energy from the sun is transferred to water bodies. This warms the water up. The result is stored thermal energy. The warm water heats the air over it. Warm air rises, so the air is now set into motion. The moving air now has kinetic energy. E: Kinetic energy in the moving air is a source of energy called Wind Energy. Wind can turn the blades and generate electrical energy, which we use in our homes. F: Energy from the sun is captured as Solar energy by cells and panels on top of our roofs. Solar energy is then transferred into electrical energy, which we use to warm our homes and turn the TV and computers on.
