What if Anything is Wrong Task – Light Emission

View the emission spectrum for Hydrogen

Describe the emission spectrum of Hydrogen It is a continuous spectrum like a light bulb 2. It consists of bright lines at distinct colors 3. It is like a rainbow

View the absorption spectrum for Hydrogen

A student makes the following comment. Student: “In the absorption spectrum for hydrogen, the hydrogen emits a continuous spectrum except at the wavelengths corresponding to the lines in the hydrogen emission spectrum.”

Answer the following on your own

What if anything is wrong with the student’s statement? The statement is correct 2. The light is emitted by a source different than the hydrogen. The missing lines have nothing to do with hydrogen 3. The hydrogen emits at all frequencies just a smaller amount for the dark lines 4. Hydrogen absorbs light from another source, and reemits in all directions reducing the brightness

Consult with your neighbors and answer again.
