Calculating Wave Speed

The Speed of Waves
The speed that a wave travels at depends on two things, the frequency of the wave f (how many in a second) and the wavelength λ (how long each wave is). All of these things are put together into one formula which, allows us to calculate the speed of any wave, including sound waves and electromagnetic waves.

Wave speed (m/s) = frequency (Hz) x wavelength (m)

Problems: (Show equation, work, final answer with correct units. ) 1 Problems: (Show equation, work, final answer with correct units.) 1. What is the wavelength of a sound wave with a frequency of 50 Hz? (Speed of sound is 342 m/s)

A certain FM radio station broadcasts electromagnetic waves at a frequency of 9.05 × 107 Hz. These radio waves travel at a speed of 3.00 × 108 m/s. What is the wavelength of these radio waves?

A sound wave in a steel rail has a frequency of 620 Hz and a wavelength of 10.5 m. What is the speed of sound in steel?

Determine the frequency of a microwave 6. 0 cm in length Determine the frequency of a microwave 6.0 cm in length. ( A microwave is an electromagnetic wave. It travels through space at a speed of 3.0 x 10 ^8 m/s)
