Basic Fractions 4 4 or four fourths 4 4 or four fourths are yellow. are yellow. This is also equal to one whole

Activity n Take a piece of construction paper n Fold the paper in half n You should have two equal parts n Now fold the paper in half again n You should have four equal parts n Label each part

Adding Simple Fractions n Step 1: Make sure the bottom numbers (the denominators) are the same. n Step 2: Add the top numbers (the numerators). Put the answer over the same denominator as in step 1 n Step 3: Simplify the fraction (if needed).

Practice n ½ + ½= n ¼ + ¼= n ½ + ¼= n ¾ + ¼ = n ¼ + ½ =

Breaking into Bigger Parts n Fractions can be divided in any number of equal parts. n Lets pretend our paper plate is a pizza. n Divide the pizza into eight equal pieces.

The Pizza is Cut into Eight Equal Slices

Questions! n If you eat 3 pieces of pizza, how much of a fraction of the pizza did you eat? n What if you were really hungry and ate 6 slices? n Now, if you ate all eight pieces… How much of the pizza did you eat?

Lets Have Fun!! Now we are going to practice!!!! practice

Summing It Up!!! n What is a fraction? n How do add fractions together and what has to be the same? n How many parts can whole be broken into? n Where are fractions? n Any questions?
