Something about roses

Roses are the most popular flowers all over the world as well as in Latvia`s culture. All that is nice we compare with roses. Therefore roses are often mentioned in our folksongs. Roses play an important role in our life- from our childhhood, through all our life till our last day and after our last day. For example: Kūmās iedama Rozīti stādu, Lai mana pādīte Kā rozīte zied. Es uzaugu pie māmiņas Jaukā rožu dārziņā; Kad es gāju tautiņās, Ar rozēm greznojos. Sēžu rožu dārziņā, Skatos rožu ziediņā; Dzied putniņi, lakstīgalas, Nodzied manu jaunu dienu.

Our writers also use roses to tell about all varieties of our emotions-happiness, love, joy till sadness and sorrow. J.Jaunsudrabiņš wrote his most famous song «Nodzisa vakara blāzma» or «Rasmas dziesma» when he was in love with a very nice young girl. Matīss Kaudzīte had to wait for his next wife about 25 years. And so we sing a song «Brūklenājs» (Rozes sen jau novītušas). Also in nowadays we have many songs where roses are mentioned as well as in another artworks: movies, novels, paintings, plays etc.

Already from ancient times roses are in our handicrafts: Es savam arājam Rožu ziedu cimdus adu; Pret saulīti vagu dzina, Kā rozīte ziedēdams. Our Zemgale`s folk skirt is woven in so named «rozīšu raksts»

Roses are popular in other cultures too. A very popular English song: Roses are red, Violets are blue. Nothing in this crazy world Could keeping me from loving You. Roses are red, Violets are blue The sun shows their beauty, But true beauty is in You.

Roses are widely used in works of English writers, for example in works of Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet,in his sonnets. «I have seen roses damask`d red and white, But no such roses see in her cheeks»(sonnet 130) We all remember the «Wars of the roses» associated with the two Royal houses – the white rose of York and the red rose of Lankaster

Now there is a real Renaissance of roses. We grow an uncountable number of sorts of roses. Our pride is Rundale Palace`s rose garden. The Rundale Palace`s rose garden are set in 9,000 square metres of territory with over 20,000 roses in bloom. The rose is a flower that is steeped in tradition.There are many elements such as the type of a rose and number of stems (stublāji,kāti). One dozen roses – traditionally send a message of love and gratitude. Two dozen roses – as a romantic gift says «I belong to You» Long stemmed roses carry a deep meaning «I will love You always» A single long stemmed rose sends a message «I love You», «Thank You» Petite roses are traditionally used to send message «You are my Sweetheart» We may arrange classic bouquets to colourful mixed bouquets.

Roses in medicine and perfumery Most roses are edible.Roses were grown in medviedal gardens more for medicine and for food than for beauty.Rose oil is used in aromatheraphy, for sore throats.the leaves, petals, roots were widely used for a varitiey conditions, including colds, fevers, stomach troubles etc. Rosehip syrup is used as a cough remedy or taken as a source of vitamine C.

The Kentucky Derby is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds, held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, on the first Saturday in May, capping the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. The race is one and a quarter miles (2 km) at Churchill Downs. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kilograms) and fillies 121 pounds (55 kilograms). The race is known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports" or "The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports" for its approximate duration, and is also called "The Run for the Roses" because a lush blanket of 564 red roses is awarded to the Kentucky Derby winner each year. The Derby is not just about horse racing. It's about the magic that makes the first Saturday in May unique in sports, fashion and style and how people come together to honor Southern traditions.
