Courageous & Intentional Conversations

What is an Intentional Conversation?  Patterson et al.: A crucial conversation is a discussion between two or more people where (1) stakes are high (2) opinions vary, and (3) emotions run strong.  Jackson: Strategic conversations are a series of targeted, individualized interactions with teachers designed to help them significantly improve the impact the impact of their teaching behaviors on student achievement.

What is an Intentional Conversation?  Scott: Powerful, strong, unbridled, unrestrained, robust. It means coming from behind yourself into the conversation and making it real.  Abrams: Whenever you feel uncomfortable, have second thoughts, or try to avoid saying what you need to say, what you aren’t saying is your hard conversation.

Let’s assess how well you handle intentional conversations…

When we avoid intentional conversations:  Our beliefs and our actions are not aligned  We experience a high level of tension and discomfort  We give silent support to others  Our trustworthiness can be questioned

In order to have successful intentional conversations you must have a PLAN!

Is the conversation you are having going to provide encouraging feedback or constructive feedback?
