3 Styles of Leadership Autocratic Democratic Laissez fair

Autocratic the leader has complete authority and control

Laissez-faire the leader exerts little influence or control.

The 5 Traits of Leaders The Telling Leader Persuading Leader Consulting Leader Joining Leader Delegating Leader

The Telling Leader Identifies a problem, considers alternative solutions, chooses one of them, and then tells the group members what they are to do Assigns roles to members May or may not consider what the group members will think or feel about the decision, but does not let them participate directly in the decision making

Persuading Leader Makes the decision without consulting the group, but instead of announcing the decision tries to persuade the group members to accept it Describes how the decision fits both the interests of the group and the interests of the individual members.

Consulting Leader Presents the problem and relevant background information, then asks for ideas on how to solve it May offer a tentative solution for the group's reaction Selects the solution he or she regards as most promising.

Joining Leader Encourages group decisions Works for group goals Allows for individual recognition Tends to guide, not rule Often submerges his or her self in the group's identity.

Delegating Leader Defines a problem and the boundaries within which it must be solved, then turns it over to the group to work out a solution Sets few guidelines Tends to have a secretarial function or resource person identity
