July 30, 2011 Dead Ball First Down Kicks Scores 11 When is it a First Down?  Downs progress 1 st through 4 th unless a first down is made or if there is an accepted penalty then down is repeated (a few penalties carry loss of down provisions)  For A:  When line to gain is reached (including affect of dead ball fouls by B on 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd down)  For an accepted penalty that includes an automatic first down Defensive pass interference Roughing the passer, kicker, holder or snapper  For B:  If B is in possession of the ball at the end of a down  If A fails to reach line to gain on 4 th down  For Team in Possession at end of down if there has been more than one change of possession

July 30, 2011 Dead Ball First Down Kicks Scores 12 When is it a First Down?  For R after legal kick if:  Ball is in R’s possession  Ball is in joint possession  Ball goes out of bounds  Ball is dead with no player in possession  K is first to touch a scrimmage kick and R accepts spot of first touching  For K:  If R is first to touch scrimmage kick beyond line of scrimmage and K recovers  If K recovers a free kick after it has gone 10 yards and touched the ground

July 30, 2011 Dead Ball First Down Kicks Scores 15 Definitions Scrimmage Kick, Free Kick  Scrimmage Kick   Legal Kick from in or behind the neutral zone  Can be place kick, punt or drop kick  Free Kick   A “Kickoff” putting ball in play: To start the half After a score (TD, FG, Safety) After a fair catch (don’t worry about that)  Must be a place kick or drop kick (for kickoff after a safety may be a punt)  “A kick is a kick” until a player secures possession (catch or recovery)

July 30, 2011 Dead Ball First Down Kicks Scores 16 A Few Other Kick-Related Definitions  Kicker  A player who legally kicks the ball  Becomes Kicker when his lower leg strikes the ball  Remains a kicker until: He has opportunity to regain balance (scrimmage Kick) He advances 5 yards of kick touches ground or another player (Free kick)  Holder – Player controlling ball on the ground or on a tee  Fair Catch  Catch made by a player in or beyond neutral zone after he gives valid fair catch signal (not quite right but good enough for now)  Can be awarded if R not given opportunity to catch the ball (whether he signals or not)  Signals – valid, invalid, illegal  Kick Catch Interference  Touch a kick in flight or catch a kick (unless on a scrimmage kick only there is no R player in position to catch kick)  Obstruct R’s path to the ball
