SOCORRO ROJAS Technology Integration Workshop #1
Softball Lesson Plan After this softball unit the student will be able to: Comprehend the rules in the game of softball Understand the difference between normal softball play and the adjustments made in the PE class. Recognize all the roles needed in the game of softball. Display the correct stance, body weight transfer and level swing needed to hit a softball. Display good sportsmanship during play in victory or defeat. Demonstrate behavior that is consistent with “safe” guidelines as outlined by the teacher. Time Allotted: 7 days
Day 1 General League Info All students will participate Aside from being a player, each student will have an additional role such as: Referee Scorekeeper/Commentator/Time Keeper Coach 1 quiz on last day Roles: Player Gives a good effort in learning techniques Play hard and fairly Respects teammates, opponents and officials Referee Manage contest Make rule decisions Keeps the game moving without any influences Scorekeeper/Commentator/Time Keeper Records scores as the occur Calculates overall score Turns in final game records to the teacher/professor Coach Represents the team on the field in conversations with the officials Provide leadership on a daily basis Assist and encourages teammates
Day 2 Rules All equipment, like helmets and gloves MUST be used at all times, especially during games NO JEWELRY allowed at any time 3 strikes to get an out but the outs will NOT count against the team Appropriate attire such as close-toed running shoes (preferably cleats) and workout clothes are required at ALL times Each player, in particular the batter & pitcher, have 5 seconds to get in position Runners are not allowed to leave the base until the ball has been struck by the batter
Day 3 Catching Lesson How to catch a softball: 1. When receiving a throw from another player, try to picture where the ball is going to go. 2. Make sure your un-gloved hand is resting on the edge of your glove. 3. Position yourself so that the ball ends up in front of you as you catch it. 4. Follow the ball with your glove, and open your gloved hand so your glove is opened wide enough for the ball to fit in. 5. In preparing to slide your un-gloved hand over the ball as soon as it enters your glove, be sure not to do this before it arrives. 6. Be ready to throw.
Day 4 Throwing Lesson How to throw a softball: 1. Grip Hold the ball in the hand you are throwing with. Hold ball by fingertips. 2. Stance Be perpendicular to your target. Legs must be shoulder width apart. The instep of your back foot should be facing the target, and your front foot will be lined up with your back foot. 3. Point your glove Now as you stay in that stance, point the hand with the glove on it toward the target. This will allow for a more accurate throw.
Day 5 Hitting a softball Lesson 1. Grip o The bottom hand (left hand for a right handed batter) controls the bat, and the top hand supports the bat loosely 2. Hand position o The hands start about three to four inches in front of the chest and between the shoulders. Both elbows are down, and the shoulders are tension free 3. Swing o Hitter pushes off the back foot as the softball approaches o Back knee will begin to move in and the hips begin to rotate. o Head and eyes remain level and still. o Lead arm should maintain a 90-degree angle while driving the front shoulder to the ball. o Top hand begins to rotate so at contact the palm is nearly facing up. 4. Contact o The bat is driven through the ball on a level plane. o Most of the weight is transferred to the front leg. o The body is in a balanced position with the weight on balls of the feet. 5. Follow Through o After contact, the hitter should allow the arms to extend and her wrists to roll over. o The majority of the player's weight remains on the firm front leg, and the back shoulder o The hip and knee should be aligned.
Day 6 Fielding Lesson Fielding a ground ball Triangle: Players have to have a good stance with the glove touching the ground. Let them hold the position for a couple of seconds and explain that both feet and the glove make a triangle. Both hands: When the ball comes into the glove make sure that the other hand is covering over the ball like a closed door. Make sure the opposite free hand doesn’t come in too early which an error is more likely to happen. Stay Down, Then come up: Always begin with the tip of the glove on the ground. If the ball takes a jump they can adjust by moving the glove up and even if they misjudge it, odds are that the top hand or body will block the ball from going past them. Footwork Keep the triangle, stay low, and instruct them to side step or shuffle. This prevents the player from turning sideways and lose focus on the ball.
Day 7 Last Day of Pre-Season Minute 0-10: Change into athletic gear Minute 10-20: Quiz Minute 20-30: Grade quizzes in class & explain if necessary Minute 30-40: Dress out
Phase 1 Advantages to using technology Students will be provided with videos of how to perform each expected task in class. The use of technology will be incorporated Roles: Timekeeper: ability to start and stop the clock Scorekeeper: keep count of the score, strikes, fouls, innings.
Technology Integration Workshop Analyze a Scenario Tech-PACK Components What is knownWhat must be learned Technology I am familiar with YouTube and other websites available to show students videos. I know how to incorporate technology in order to provide visuals. I need to learn how to use a softball pitching machine Pedagogy Provide a visual Explain the expectations Provide feedback Create a softball obstacle course for students to improve their skills. Content Grade quizzes to get an idea on the student’s understanding Review rules Review roles Review quiz grades
Phase 2 Lesson plan objectives: Students will Demonstrate understanding of the rules of softball Learn the numerous roles needed to play the game Come together as a class and show good sportsmanship Be able to successfully throw, catch and hit a softball properly Student assessment: Checklist Provide the list of how to perform each task for the students Provide examples and demonstrate what is expected of each student Create a slideshow of the rules with a short review at the end Observation assessment will consist of each student physically demonstrating what they have learned
continued Written response questions: Write down the roles we discussed in the slideshow Choose one role and explain what is expected of it Briefly describe the steps of how to throw a softball Grouping: Students will work in groups of 4 or 5 taking turns to throw, catch and hit the softball Content approach: Group subject/unit: playing softball requires a team effort in order to play Constructivist: students will be able to help each other as a team Appropriate learning environment: Reserve softball fields ahead of time. Reserve the gym to practice on designated days Make time to show how to videos Create handouts so students can review the rules and how to perform each task
Phase 3 Evaluation/Revision activities: Determine if the students met the objectives: Throw a softball 3 times successfully Catch a softball 3 times successfully Hit a softball 3 times successfully Answer any questions students may have on their expectations Did the students have the necessary equipment to practice as much as needed Was the class time frame enough, too short, or too long for the students to learn everything What can I do to better assist the students in learning softball
