Media of the 1950’s Sports! News! Television! Advertisements! Works Cited!

Sports!  After the invention of the Television, the growth of sports was exponential!  During this time college football was more popular than pro football!  Boxing was also a popular sport.  The first Olympics to be televised worldwide were the 1960 Rome Olympics.  Here is a clip of a 1950’s sports broadcast.

News!  After the television was released, local news became a huge need  The first presidential speech to be televised was by FDR on October 5 th  The news being broadcasted over the radio and television allowed a much more “intelligent” population  The news system informed people about weather, recent happenings and the broadcast most listened to, and watched was war information.  For a list of 1950’s radio programs, click Here!Here

Advertisements!  Advertisements in the 1950’s were NOTHING like they are today.  Commercials in the 1950’s were very over the top or ridiculous, many of us have seen 1950’s commercial’s.  Most commercials during this time would focus their attention on women  EX. cleaning supplies, ironing boards…  Many of the commercials featured a song or “jingle” and a cartoon character!  Here is a link of a commercial for Kool-aid. 

Television!  Some of the types of shows in the 1950’s were  Comedy’s  Sitcom’s  Drama’s  Action  Western’s  Popularity  The popularity of the television exploded once released, at first, it was not a affordable item to the everyday person, but, once the economy was revived, 1 in 4 people had a television in their home!  Popular shows  There were many popular shows in the 1950’s. Some of which are still played today, and some still even have new episodes!
