Types of Subtraction Problems T opic 2-3

"Taking Away" In this type of problem, there is a beginning amount, an amount is taken away, and there is an amount left.

Kameron had 18 tickets. He spent 7 of them at the ticket exchange. How many tickets does Kameron have left?

Mrs. Schulte has a lot of shoes. In fact, she has 25 pairs! If Mrs. Schulte gives away 8 pairs of shoes, how many pairs does she still have?

"Comparing" In this type of problem, two amounts are given and we must find the difference between the two amounts. They often ask: how much more how much less how much taller how much shorter how many more how many less

Mr. Matt ran 3 miles at the gym. Mrs. Herbert ran 8 miles at the gym. How many more miles did Mrs. Herbert run than Matt?

Laila kicks the soccer ball 22 feet. Laila's little sister kicked the soccer ball 8 feet. How much farther did Laila kick the ball than her sister?

"Missing Addend" To solve this type of problem, we must know that subtraction and addition have an inverse relationship (they are opposites of each other). We are given the total of two numbers and one addend, and we must subtract to find the missing part.

5 + __ = __ = __ = 28

Together, Alex and Elizabeth have 24 cookies! If Alex baked 10 of the cookies, how many did Elizabeth bake? ___ + ___ = ___

Emma Grace must read a total of 40 pages each night. If she has read 30 pages so far, how many more pages must she read? ___ + ___ = ___
