Colossians 1:1-8 Paul Thanks God For The Colossian Saints

The Apostolic Authority of Paul Colossians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother. 1 st Thessalonians 2:6 nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others even though as apostles of Christ we might have asserted our authority. 1. Apostles used generically as “messengers.” 2. Timothy and Silas were apostles. 3. Paul is using the “royal we.”

Paul’s Greeting Colossians 1:2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father.  Saints = 1. Elect Deut. 7:5-7; 1Cor. 1:2 2. Believers Rom. 4:16; Jude 1:3 3. Set apart Heb. 2:11 4. Eternally Secure (persevere) John 10:27-29; Rev. 14:12

Paul’s Thankfulness To God Colossians 1:3-5 We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, (since) we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for all the saints; because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel… 1. faith, love, hope = Gal. 5:5-6; 1 st Thess. 1:3 2. in Christ Jesus = “the sphere in which faith lives” 3. because of the hope = basis of the faith and love! Lessons Learned: What does this say about those who claim you can be “so heavenly minded – your no earthly good”? What does this say about our gospel presentation?

Paul’s Thankfulness To God because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel… Colossians 1:6 which has come to you just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth; heard = Dt. 4:10; 6:4; Is. 6:10; Mt. 13:13 understood = Dt. 4:39, Mt. 13:11; 2 nd Ti. 2:25

Paul’s Thankfulness To God Colossians 1:7-8 just as you learned it from Epaphras, our beloved fellow bond-servant, who is a faithful servant of Christ on our behalf, and he also informed us of your love in the Spirit.

Applications:  We too should be thankful for the salvation of the saints. (John 13:34-35; 1 John 5:1) Romans 9:22-23 NKJV What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory…
