Purposes for Reading There are many purposes for reading. Readers can entertain themselves, learn things, get directions, and even find out facts about anything they want to. Here are some of the reasons to read:

To be entertained To be entertained: People read lots of different things just because they enjoy it. Reading can make you laugh and cry, and it can take you to different worlds or time periods. To be informed To be informed: People read lots of different things in order to get information, understand something, or to find out facts. What do people read when they want to be informed? Newspaper articles Magazine articles Textbooks Encyclopedias Websites ( Dictionaries

Purpose for reading To get directions: Need to find out how to get somewhere? Read a map, a sign, or a set of instructions! To learn how to do something or solve a problem: Are you trying to do something you've never tried before? Read a recipe, a set of instructions, or a "how-to" book on the subject you're interested in! To be persuaded: Advertisements and editorials (opinion pieces) are texts that have the purpose of persuading the reader. Many people like to read editorials to help them form their opinions on an issue.
