Green manures

Green manures are quick-growing plants which are dug back into the soil before they flower. It is possible to dig in annual weeds, but they must not be in flower. Green manures have the following advantages: Covers bare ground Competes out weeds Reduces soil erosion Prevents leaching of some nutrients Adds organic matter Increases micro-organism activity in soil Develops soil fertility and soil structure.

Trifolium repens (White Clover)

Trifolium incarnatum (Crimson Clover)

Trifolium pratense (Red Clover)

Medicago lupilina (Yellow Trefoil)

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum)

Lolium perenne (Perennial Rye Grass)

Melilotus officinalis (Sweet Clover)

Raphanus sativus (Fodder Raddish)

Vicia sativa (Vetch)

Lupinus angustifolius (Lupin)

Alfalfa
