Rules for Semi-Colon Usage  A semicolon can join two clauses using transitional words like however, otherwise, therefore, subsequently, in addition etc.  A semicolon is stronger than a comma.  The semicolon separates a sentence with two closely related meanings.  Semi-colons can be used to list things

Examples  You tried your hardest; second place is a good finish.  I like chocolate; however, I don’t like dark chocolate.  At the store I will need apples; butter; eggs; milk.

You Try It 1. Kelly wants to play outside Kim wants to play inside. 2. You didn’t try your very best your marks went down this term. 3. If you go to the store, I’ll need golden apples unsalted butter whole wheat bread tomato soup and potatoes. 4. All students must: arrive on time complete all tasks follow the rules and be their best. 5. My mother planted roses the roses were all red.
