Governments do more than pass laws. They also provide many services for people. They operate armies and navies. They build roads and bridges. They establish and run schools. Governments allow people to work together to do things that it would be difficult for them to do by themselves. What other services can you name that governments provide for the people?

The third branch of Government is made up of the courts. Disagreements between people are settled in court. When a person is accused of breaking a law, the person is a usually brought before a judge and a jury for a trial. A jury is a group of citizens. The jury and the judge decide whether or not the person has broken a law.

The General Assembly is the branch that makes the laws for the state. The people of Missouri elect the members of the General Assembly. The two parts of the General Assembly are the State House of Representatives and the state Senate. The General Assembly meets in Jefferson City. Jefferson City is the capital city of the state of Missouri.

Each Government checks each other so one branch does not have to much power. If one branch has to much power, than they will overrule the other branches.
