The First Negative Constructive

Steps 1.Introduction 2.Address Definitions 3.Rebut the Aff Contentions 4.Outline Neg Contentions 5.Summation

Introduction “Hello, my name is _____ and I along with my partner _____ are representing Lauralton Hall to negate the resolution that ….” This is probably second nature by now, but it is important to remember Judges appreciate clarity, consistency, and order!

Introduction (cont’d) Since you’ll be doing more than one thing in this speech, you MUST OUTLINE it. Tell the judge EXACTLY what you intend to cover: – “First, I would like to address the terms defined by my opponent, and provide clash with each of their arguments. Then, I will outline and strengthen my own case.” – Make sure you STICK TO THIS ORDER!

Address Definitions The AFF will have defined a few terms in their opening speech, but you can also define terms. You should address each definition: – “I would like to challenge the term as previously defined by my opponent…” Give reasons WHY this is a biased/unreliable definition, and provide your own. State WHY yours is superior. If you do not challenge definitions in your first speech, they must stand. You may also define any extra terms you have *Note: Only define terms that are relevant to the case, otherwise the judge will usually see it as a waste of time.

Rebut AFF’s Contentions This is a VERY IMPORTANT part of your speech IF YOU DO NOT REBUT AFF’S CONTENTIONS, TECHNICALLY, YOU ARE AGREEING WITH THEM – Some judges will REALLY deduct points, and some may even decide right then that you lost the round There are more ways than one to rebut AFF’s arguments: – Facts, trends, pieces of evidence used in your contentions, etc. – In some instances, conceding with part of your opponent’s arguments can help your case

Rebutting (cont’d) You want to make sure that you address EVERY POINT that your opponent makes! Go contention-by-contention

Outline Neg’s Contentions Now it’s time to bring in your own argument What I like to do is: 1.Quickly read my three contentions 2.Go back and elaborate on each one I find that it is generally better for the judge to know the general scope of your argument before going into detail

Summation You should always close your speech with a strong but short statement about why your arguments are superior. Try to tie it back to the resolution/the “main question” of the debate.
