Web License - This edition involves a floating license component that is web based where the licenses are stored on the Kurzweil Education firefly server and an Internet connection is required for access. A user database is configured by the customer using the firefly based web portal which allows unique user logins to the server.

The product functions as an extension of your Kurzweil 3000 Web License subscription, as you may access and upload files to the same web storage area to share files between the products. firefly is a web-based text-to-speech reading tool that allows students to access documents in his/her Kurzweil library from any computer or device with an internet connection.

Choose a range from 100 to 300% or Fit to Width option to fit the document to the browser window width. Dictionary: To look up a word, select a word, then click the Dictionary button. In the Definition window that opens, a Play button is available to read the definition.

To go to a specific page, enter the page number in the Go to page box at the bottom of the firefly window, and then click the Arrow button or press Enter.

developing PARTNERSHIPS building CAPACITY supporting STUDENTS implementing TECHNOLOGY To Read, using dual highlighting, click the green Read button. firefly highlights each word and Reading unit in two different colors To move the cursor Backward to the previous reading unit or Forward to the next reading unit, click the Double Left Arrow or Double Right Arrow button in the Reading button set. Click the Read button to read from that point. firefly moves the cursor forward/backward by the Reading Unit Option selected. By default, the Reading unit is set to sentence.

developing PARTNERSHIPS building CAPACITY supporting STUDENTS implementing TECHNOLOGY Tool choices are: Select Text, Highlight Text, Erase Highlighting Highlighting Text and Saving Highlights To highlight text in a document: 1)Hover over the Tool Selection button and select a color pen from the Highlight Text area. 2) In the document, select the text you want to highlight. 3) Repeat step 1 whenever you want to highlight in a different color. 4) When you are done, click the Select Text button to end the highlighting function.

developing PARTNERSHIPS building CAPACITY supporting STUDENTS implementing TECHNOLOGY Highlighting and Erasing highlights To erase highlighting: 1)Hover over the Tool Selection button and click the Erase Highlights button. 2) In the document, drag- select the highlighted text you want to erase. 3) When you are done, click the Select Text button to end the erase function. To save highlights: After highlighting, navigate to another page or click the Back to Library button. Do not close the browser or leave the firefly website, otherwise, you may lose the highlights for the session. Notes about saving highlights: In firefly, you can view highlights that were added to a.KES document in Kurzweil Be sure to save the document to the Library from Kurzweil 3000 after you add or change the highlights. Highlighting added in firefly will not display when you open that document in Kurzweil 3000.

Highlight the text you want to translate, and with the text selected click on the Translate button. Choose your language

Choose a language: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, or Finnish. After a translation is complete, use the Play button to read the translation.

Helps you to retain more information through listening than reading Assists you with monitoring and revising their typed work, as hearing the text read aloud may assist students in catching grammatical errors Can improve your sight reading and decoding abilities Can improve your reading comprehension (difficulty hearing letter- sounds) as you can learn to decode new words when they are highlighted as they are read aloud

developing PARTNERSHIPS building CAPACITY supporting STUDENTS implementing TECHNOLOGY Kurzweil files at home: When you click on your name listed to the left, 3 options will show up underneath: Private (this is where a teacher could put a test for only you to work on) Public (a place to keep the resources you want to keep) Recently Opened (things you are working on right now) When you select a text or a novel, the listing of all the chapters will show up in the box on the right side of the screen. Select the chapter you want to read and then wait while it loads. The large green play button at the top will start the reading. When you stop reading and then want to read more at home, you can log in from home, go to the recently opened section under your name and when you pick that same book it will appear exactly where you stopped reading earlier.

You understand and remember things you have heard. You store information by the way it sounds, and you have an easier time understanding spoken instructions than written ones. Where will you be able to ACCESS Kurzweil? PC or MAC Computer with Kurzweil and earbuds/headphone. What are you presently using Kurzweil for in school?

You will also have access to shared collections like Classic Literature.

You will see a list of folders that are available to the users in your subscription. Your login name will appear at the top of the list. Beneath the User folders is a list of firefly Shared Library folders.

There are several buttons for navigation. The Library button takes you back to the Library. The button in the center is a Start / Stop reading toggle. Tap it once to start reading (the Play button changes to a Stop button). Tap the Stop button to stop reading. The buttons on each side of the Start / Stop reading toggle are for moving to the next or previous reading unit. The button on the left moves back to the previous reading unit; the button on the right advances to the next reading unit. The Options button opens the Options panel.

Zoom works the same as it does in other iPad apps -- place two fingers on the page and spread your fingers apart to zoom in. Or, pinch your fingers together to zoom back out.

Tap and hold the button on the Pace slider and move it left to slow down the reading speed or move it right to speed it up. 2. When you have finished, tap anywhere outside the options panel to close it.

Scroll through the list to choose a voice. As you scroll, the voices are displayed in gray type, except for one in the center displayed in black type. Scroll until the voice you want appears in the center with black type. When you have finished, tap anywhere outside the options panel to close it.

developing PARTNERSHIPS building CAPACITY supporting STUDENTS implementing TECHNOLOGY Choose the Reading Unit You can select from four reading units: Word, Line, Sentence, and Paragraph. The selection you choose determines how much of your reading material is highlighted while you read. 1. Click the Word, Line, Sentence, or Paragraph button. 2. When you have finished, tap anywhere outside the options panel to close it.

developing PARTNERSHIPS building CAPACITY supporting STUDENTS implementing TECHNOLOGY Choose the Reading Mode There are two reading modes: Continuous and Self-Paced. If you choose Continuous, reading continues from your starting point until you stop it. If you choose Self-Paced, reading is determined by your reading unit selection. For example, if you choose Paragraph, reading will continue from your starting point for a paragraph and then pause; if you choose Sentence, reading will continue from your starting point for a sentence and then pause.

developing PARTNERSHIPS building CAPACITY supporting STUDENTS implementing TECHNOLOGY Choosing Notes Display firefly supports viewing and reading two note styles found in KES files you upload to firefly: Sticky Notes Text Notes Note: the notes feature does not apply to KES files saved to your Universal Library in versions prior to the May 2015 version of firefly. 1. To display notes, click Yes for Sticky Notes and/or Text Notes. 2. To leave the notes hidden from view, click No. 3. When you have finished, tap anywhere outside the options panel to close it.

Tap the note you want to move until the word on the top left displays in green. Press briefly on the area you want the note to move to, then release. The note will jump to that position. Note: The note you moved will only remain in this position during the session. If you close the document and then reopen later, the note will be in its previous position.

To select a word, press the screen anywhere and hold until the selection handles are displayed along with the menu choices: Translate, Highlight, and Define. Drag one of the handles to increase the selection, if desired.

Tap the language that you want the selection translated to. The Translation Page is displayed showing the text you selected alongside the translation of that text. The translation is highlighted.

The translation is highlighted. Click the Read button to hear (or read) the translated text. (Note: Voice is not available with every language.) 5. When you have finished, tap the Back button return to the page you were reading.

developing PARTNERSHIPS building CAPACITY supporting STUDENTS implementing TECHNOLOGY Highlighting Text To make a selection, press the screen and hold until the selection handles are displayed along with the menu of choices: Translate, Highlight, and Define. Drag one of the handles to increase the selection, if desired. Tap the highlight color of choice. The menu closes and the selected text is highlighted in that color. Note: To remove the highlight from text, select the highlighted text, select Highlight from the menu, and choose Erase from the color choices.

Click Yes to resume reading. firefly will navigate to the document, open it, and go to the page you were at when you logged out. Click No if you want to open a different document. firefly on the iPad can read text files (TXT), Word files (RTF, DOC, and DOCX), Kurzweil files (KES), ePub files (EPUB), and PDF files (PDF).
