Saturn’s astronomical sign ↓

Name Origin  Saturn’s name comes from the Roman god of agriculture, Saturn.

Atmosphere  Saturn’s atmosphere consists of Liquid hydrogen, helium, and trace amounts ammonia and methane.  Did you know that Saturn’s northern atmosphere appears Blue? →

Moons  Saturn’s has 62 Moons. 53 of which are officially named.  Titan, Saturn’s biggest moon is the only moon with an atmosphere.

Density and Volume  Saturn's density is 1/8 the density of earth, but has a mass 95 times greater than earth. If you put Saturn in a huge bathtub it would float because its so light!

The Rings  Saturn’s rings are made up of ice and rock. Although the rings appear solid, they are just millions of ice and rock that range from the size of a pebble to the size of a house!

Orbit and Rotation  It takes Saturn 29 ½ Earth years to revolve around the sun once!  Cassini, Voyager and Pioneer probes estimated Saturn’s rotation to be 10 hours 32 minutes.

Flyby Probes  September Pioneer 11 was the first probe to visit Saturn  November 1980-Voyager 1 sends 1 st high-resolution images of Saturn.  August 1981-Voyager 2 sends back evidence of changes in Saturn’s atmosphere & rings.  July 2004-Cassini–Huygens flyby of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, captured radar images of large lakes. Left-right pioneer 11, voyager 1-2, Cassini-Huygens.

Pop Quiz!!  1. What is the name of Saturn’s largest moon?  2. Saturn was named after the roman god of what?  3. What color does Saturn’s northern atmosphere appear?  4. True or False? It takes Saturn 40 years to orbit the sun.  5. True or false? Pioneer 11 was the first probe to visit Saturn.
