Islamic Development Bank6 Scope of IDB-STATCAP Physical infrastructure and equipment: to facilitate production and dissemination of data by member countries’ statistical agencies Statistical infrastructure: to support collection and processing of data and leveraging best practices Statistical operations: to upgrade and develop core sets of tools, manpower, and methods required for collecting, compiling and disseminating data Institutional framework for national statistics: to support policy, legal and regulatory framework for statistics
Pillars of the IDB-STATCAP STATCAP is mainstreamed in IDB operations Three M.Sc Scholarships for statisticians Statistical trainings, workshops, seminars, exchange of statistical experts, and Study visits Development of information system and statistical data collection activities. 8 Policies All member countries of the IDB Group are eligible for funding under the IDB-STATCAP, but member countries with least developed statistical capacity (especially LDMCs) will have priority All funding provided under IDB-STATCAP shall be in the form of grants and every effort shall be made to cover as many countries and regions as possible
Islamic Development Bank9 Policies continue … Proposals for projects/programs funding or co- funding may originate from different sources, including statistical agencies of member countries, regional and international institutions, and development partners All proposals submitted will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis, provided all requirements are met at the time of submission Full details on guidelines and procedures are available on IDB Website,
Islamic Development Bank10 Progress of Implementation of IDB-STATCAP Under the IDB-STATCAP program, three member countries (Guinea-Bissau, Morocco and Djibouti) received a cumulative amount of US$ 400,000 in 2008 Another three member countries (Mauritania, Comoros and Guinea) benefited from the IDB-STATCAP scholarship program in 2008/2009 academic year Development of “Intra-Investment database of OIC member countries” (with ITAP and UNCTAD)
Islamic Development Bank11 Progress of Implementation continue… Partnership with regional statistical institutions: SESRIC, a training course on National Accounts in Turkey (13 Asian countries) AIRTS, a training course on “Analysis of Census Micro-Data using REDATAM System” (15 Arab countries attended) Partnership with development partners: AfDB, agreement is being reached for co- financing of statistical activities of common MCs DFID (UK), agreement is underway to manage a fund for SCB for MCs from MENA region
Islamic Development Bank12 Way Forward Plan to undertake Statistical Diagnostic Studies in MCs with inadequate statistical capacities Outcome of the studies will help IDB to identify priority areas for statistical capacity projects.
