The Great Wall of China

The great wall of China is 50,000* kilometers, or approximately 31,070 miles. *When including all the walls built in different dynasties all over china. The one often referred to when talking about the great wall of china is only 6,000 kilometers long, or 3,728 miles long.

The great wall of China was mainly built to keep out the Huns.* *The Huns were a group of nomadic (roaming), warlike people from the steppes (grasslands) of North Central Asia north of China.

The great wall was originally built in the 7 th century B.C. when China was still divided into small states.* China is split into 22 provinces, 5 autonomous** regions, 4 municipalities***, and 2 special autonomous regions. ***A municipality is a city or town with its own local government. **Autonomous means an area that is independent and has its own control.

The great wall of China is 25 ft. high. The great wall of China is the longest man-made structure in the world.

The great wall of China in Chinese is ‘ 长城 ’. The great wall of China was built by Qin Shi Huang. * The pin yin is chang cheng

Before the use of bricks, the Great Wall was made of earth or Taipa*, however, bricks were heavily used in many areas of the wall. *Taipa is the technique used in the building of walls using mud, lime, and chalk.

The present day great wall is long enough to circle the earth on the equator five times before stopping.* *It fits on the border of china because the wall is not straight at all, it is very zig-zagged and is also going up and down mountains a lot.

Many Chinese bodies are actually buried within the wall.* Approximately 300,000 soldiers and 500,000 commoners** worked on the original great wall in the Qin dynasty. *Millions of people died during the building of the great wall of china. **Which was about 70% of China’s population

The great wall of China was finished near the end of the Ming dynasty. ( ) The Great wall of China was not only built by the Chinese. The Manchus were a nomad tribe that helped build the great wall.
