Capitalizing Proper Nouns Rule: Proper nouns are the names of a specific person, place, or thing. The basic capitalization rule of proper nouns is that the first letters are capitalized. Categories of proper nouns include: names of people & pets, geographical locations, months, days of the week, holidays, astronomical names, organizations, books, newspapers, magazines, peoples titles, building names, languages, brands.

Tuesday, September 1, 2015 Corrections: double subject, wordy sentence Emmitt Smith he holds the NFL record for the most yards rushing in a career and no one has ever made more than he has.

Fixing a wordy sentence Rule: When fixing a wordy sentence, try to eliminate redundant statements (needless repetition) and useless phrases. Example: It is very unusual to find someone who has never told a deliberate lie on purpose. 4

Wednesday, September 2, 2015 Corrections: subject-verb agreement, using the right word, end punctuation Until 2001, Babe Ruth were walked more then any other baseball player? 5

End Punctuation Rule : You have three options for the end of a sentence: period, exclamation mark, or question mark. Periods - have finality, but are less forceful than an exclamation mark. Periods can be used at the end of imperative (telling someone to do something) or declarative (explaining something) sentences. Question marks - A question mark is required at the end of an interrogative sentence. Usually, interrogative sentences are identified by a question word (who, what, when, where, why, how) Exclamation Point -Exclamation marks are used in exclamatory sentences, and sometimes in imperative sentences. Avoid using exclamation marks in formal writing. 6

Thursday, September 3, 2015 Corrections: irregular verb, capitalization, combining sentences reggie jackson swinged like a dynamo. Reggie hit three home runs in the final game of the 1977 world series. Corrections: capitalization, using the right word, numbers, verb tense ty cobb is the 1 st player excepted into the baseball hall of fame. 7

Combining sentences with the same subject Rule: Sentences with the same subject can be combined, since you’re describing the same person, place, or thing completing different actions. The sentences before they are combined unnecessarily repeat words that may be omitted by combining the sentences together. Example: Instead of: “The baby walked. The mother walked along.” Try: “The mother walked along with the baby.” 8
