2. How is egypt affected by its’ geography? The Nile River provides water for crops and fertile soil. Cataracts provide a natural protection from enemies.

3. What is the northern part of egypt called? southern? The Northern part of Egypt is called Lower Egypt. The Southern part of Egypt is called Upper Egypt.

4. Why did the egyptian king wear a double crown? They wanted to show the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt.

5. Who was Egypt’s first pharaoh? Menes

6. When did the Egyptians begin to build pyramids? Old Kingdom

7. What are mummies? Specially treated bodies wrapped in cloth.

8. What are pyramids? Who were they built for? Pyramids are huge triangular tombs built by the Egyptians and other peoples. They were built only for the pharaohs.

9. What is engineering? The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes.

10. What was the purpose of filling the pharaoh’s tomb with things like jewelry, food, and other things? It was believed that the pharaohs would need it in the afterlife.

11. Who is Ahmose? He is the prince who drove the Hyksos out of Egypt.

12. How did the middle kingdom begin? The Middle Kingdom began because of Mentuhotep II. This period of time was a time of stability and order.

13. Who is Mentuhotep II? He united the Middle Kingdom around 2050 BCE.

14. Who is Queen hatshepsut? She is the first female to rule Egypt y herself.

15. What are trade networks? A path of people in different lands who trade goods.

16. What are hieroglyphics? Egyptian writing system that used pictures and symbols.

17. What is papyrus and why is it important? Papyrus is a long-lasting, paper-like material made from reeds.

18. What is the significance of the rosetta stone? It has helped historians understand and decipher hieroglyphics.

19. What is the Sphinx? It is an imaginary creature with the body of a lion and the head of another animal.

20. What is an obelisk? A tall, four-sided pillar that is pointed on top.

21. Why did Egyptian artists paint pictures that depict daily life inside the pyramids? how about temples? They decorated pyramids in order to decorate and beautify the resting place of the pharaoh. The temple art was created to honor the gods.

22. What did the egyptians like to do in their free time? They liked to play sports and board games like Senet. Senet was a universal game played by all people of Egypt and it didn’t matter the social class you belonged to.

23. How were the kushites and egyptians similar? They spoke the same language (Egyptian) Kushites used Egyptian names. They wore Egyptian-style clothing. Adopted Egyptian religious practices.

24. Who is King Kashta? He is the Kushite king that seized Egypt in the 700s BCE.

25. Who is King Ezana? He is the leader of the Aksumite army that invaded and took over Kush in 350 AD.
