Year Round School Has Its Advantages Woodrow Wilson High School

About Year-round Schools Nearly 2 million students attend year-round school These students are mainly in California, Texas, Florida and Kentucky Many communities and teachers oppose year-round school because it is misunderstood Year-round schooling has succeeded everywhere it has been started

Public Schools Already Participating

Clearing Up the Misconception Year-round schooling helps alleviate overcrowding in large schools Data shows that students do as well, and sometimes better with shorter summers The shorter breaks means that students spend less time reviewing, and more time learning

U.S. vs. Canada Total number of states*: 47 Total number of public/private schools: 3,206 Total number of provinces: 3 Total number of public/private schools: 40 *=includes Washington, D.C.

The need for three months off in the summer is diminishing The Calendar The need for three months off in the summer is diminishing The traditional calendar was devised mainly for farmers who needed their children during the summer Year-Round Education, means revising the traditional nine month calendar into a calendar that allows for a shorter summers and more breaks during the year

The Two Calendars The Traditional Calendar The Balanced Calendar 70 Days of Learning 3 Days Off- Thanksgiving 15 Days of Learning 10 Days Off-Winter Break 55 Days of Learning 5 Days Off- Spring Break 40 Days of Learning 60 Days Off- Summer Break 45 Days of Learning 15 Days Off-Fall Break 30 Days of Learning 3 Days Off-Thanksgiving 15 Days of Learning 15 Days Off-Winter Break 15 Days Off-Spring Break 30 Days Off-Summer Break

Single Track vs. Multi-Track Single Track provides a more balanced calendar for more continuous learning It doesn’t reduce class sizes or accommodate more students Multi-Track is used to alleviate overcrowding It was designed specifically for schools with a shortage of classroom space Multi-Track divides students and teachers into groups with their own schedule, creating a “school within a school” concept

Conclusion Year-round education deserves another look, especially by school districts with overcrowded elementary schools, and those wanting to offer parents another option.
