Tsunami Run-up Prediction for Seaside,Oregon …and why we should be worried.

What’s a tsunami? Background material

A tsunami is bad news.  Tsunamis = ocean waves (not wave, waves)  Earthquake  Landslide  Volcanic eruption  Teletsunami  Far away source (> 1000 km)  Earthquake source (>7.5)  2004 Indian Ocean  Usually it’s them subduction zones  Vertical displacement when ocean crust decides its tired of being on top ;)

Local Tsunamis are also pretty bad.  Local tsunami  Generated locally, derp.  Small earthquakes of about 4.2 magnitude do this.  It’s why Japan has problem.  Serious problem.  Can devastate only local coasts  …but in minutes.

Key terms you should know to sound smart during a tsunami  Tsunami run-up  Vertical height of the wave as it comes ashore  Wave height  Vertical height of the wave before it comes ashore  Inundation distance  Horizontal distance a tsunami streches onshore from the coast  Tsunami Inundation Area  Calculated height above sea level  So now you can point out the difference when one of your non-AP Enviro students foolishly calls the tsunami run-up the wave height of the tsunami looming over your heads.

In case that was too many words in a row for you

What’s an Oregon?

I’d like to live there…it’s so pretty!  Not unless you want to pay extra in flood insurance.

Examine this picture, and you will see why.

Why is Oregon in a bad situation?  The state is super close to sea level  That’s what you get for living in beachhouse communities.  Tillamook Head will kill you  Large rock outcrop that concentrates the energy of the wave and makes tsunamis even more terrifying than usual, which is a pretty hard accomplishment.  Seaside residents have only minutes to evacuate if there’s a local tsunami  How far can you get in minutes?  You can’t even get to Chinatown by foot and back during your lunch period.

What is a Seaside?

Where do tsunamis strike? Observations

BUT WHERE IN OREGON?!?!!

Show me something cool!

ITS SO PRETTY BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!

BUT WHAT SHOULD I CONCENTRATE ON THERE’S SO MUCH OREGON!

WHERE ARE ALL THE PEOPLE?

How much will be flooded?!

Now put it with the other pretty colors!

Where’s Tillamook Head and Seaside?!

WHO DO WE HAVE TO SAVE?

Let’s get another look

WHAT DO?!

BUT WHAT OF THE OTHERS?!
