The Problem 10.5 million children of primary school age are estimated to be out-of-school in Nigeria. (April 4, Premium Times) “60 per cent of the out-of-school children are girls and most of them live in the north of the country.” (June 15, Leadership Newspaper) Children from rural areas or economically disadvantaged backgrounds in Nigeria have limited access to books in the home and community (Usoro and Usanga, 2007). “Library services are not given to children who for some reason or the other are out of normal school or library environment.” “30 million Nigerians have graduated from high school with poor reading skills....Without the support of efficient libraries, schools cannot successfully achieve the goals of education.” (Aina & ors, 2011) Picture by Kunle Ayodeji
