MONTH 9 The Larger Outreach: By Dr. Owen Weston Dmin, PhD

24 to Double Schedule of Monthly Training 1st Year: 7th Month What is the next big event on the calendar for which we can challenge our congregation to bring friends? Plan the event (when, what, how, who) How to bring the crowds (from the congregation / marketing) Getting people involved (in production, in preparation) Getting the program ready (who is in charge and who is helping) Getting the people ready (love the visitors)

8th Month Summary 10 % of churches budget to reach your city (missions and denominational funds raised above general giving) Most people come to your church because they have friends or family there. Use activities to invite family and friends to come and support their friends Use 4 big days for major outreach activities to double your church those days Use baptism, baby dedications etc Have soul winning teams Have mission drives to grow the church

MONTH 9 The Larger Outreach: The 4 Big Events & Monthly Ministry Events. How to use big events effectively to get people to come back

LAWS OF OUTREACH Missional or Outreach ministries is the one of the most important in the church because this is what grows the church. Here is the 1st rule of a missional church- Exposure: “The more people exposed to your church, the more people who will make your church their church home.” Rule 2 - Repetition: “The more times they have reason for coming back to your church, the more permanent they will become.”

OUTREACH LAWS Rule 3 -promotion: “the more the pastor promotes the outreach event, the more parishioners want to help.” Rule 4- Involvement: “The more people involved in outreach the more missional the church becomes and the more people it will reach. Rule 5- Influence: “The more people involved in outreach, the more their family and friends will attend church.

OUTREACH LAWS Rule 6 - Focus: “The more the church is outreach focused the less internal problems it has.” Rule 7 - Networking: “The number of people attending is four times the number of people involved”

Setting up an Outreach church Calendar Look at the annual community calendar and see what the church can use as outreach i.e. Law enforcement Day could be a big day on Sunday to have the mayor and the media in your church honoring the police force. Look at the calendar to see what events are coming up that the church can use as outreach, e.g. Mother’s day, Father’s day, Memorial day, Veteran’s day, etc.

The Outreach Team Each person on the OT should have an event over which they are responsible for creating visitors to attend. The others on the team will help and will expect the same type of help for their Outreach event. NOTE: Limit it to one event a month

Example of a Church Calendar always try to include these First Sunday of each month - Baptism (reaches families) Baby dedications - as needed (reaches young families) Weddings - normally Spring and Fall (reaches young couples) Memorials - as needed (good to reach older parishners) Focus on the events that help the church reach it target audience

STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL OUTREACH EVENT Plan your Year in the Fall of the previous year. Plan to advertise the event at least 2 weeks before Involve as many people as possible in the event Make sure your outreach team/s contacts the key players to get a list of their family and friends to invite them to come and support the key player through an Invitational card and a phone call to each Your OT needs to be at the door to meet these new invitees.

STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL FOLLOW-UP OF AN OUTREACH EVENT Make sure your OT and Follow-up Team have the names and info on the visitors through the Front-door Team’s visitor registration. If you invited them then contact these visitors who came to the event to support a key person the week following the event and thank them for coming. Ask if there is anything the church can do for them. “As you win them so you keep them” so invite them, if they are open to it, to the next BIG EVENT, not to next Sunday (unless it is another big event) Often after Easter we would have a picnic to get everyone to return ( double impact) Make sure the Follow-up team follows up on them

Summary of Month 9 7 Rules of outreach – Exposure, Repetition, Promotion, Involvement, Influence, Focus and Networking. Setting up the Outreach calendar Each person on the Outreach Team has an event Using big days and monthly events to grow the church The use of the secular calendar Steps to a successful outreach event ( double impact) Steps to a successful follow-up of events

NEXT MONTH 10 Follow-up on Larger Outreach Retention to other big events – enlarging the pool (front-door, follow-up visits or calls, evaluating) Make sure you only follow-up on Sunday morning visitors. Your steps to discipleship.
